The crickets murmured and the distant coyotes howled, looking for fresh kill as Chester slept. Tomorrow morning this small group of The Rebels will become much larger and then they will march into Washington D.C. in two days.
Chester's eyes fluttered open the next morning, to the ambient sounds of nature. He grabbed a tree root and pulled himself into a sitting position. Chester gasped and started choking on his own saliva at what he saw.
Standing outside the cave mouth were so many people. "Hey there, kid." Someone in the crowd said. "We are The Rebels." At this, Mrs. Ink stood up on her tired, sore legs and tells Chester's small group to get up.
Christine opened her sleepy eyes and groggily groaned as she struggled to her feet. The night before, Mrs. Ink had contacted the main Rebels group and gave them their coordinates.
The treacherous storm had passed and the sun was just rising, sending hopeful golden rays across the land. The smell of cooking fish filled the air. Chester's favorite meal. But where did they get the fish from? Chester wondered this, but at the same moment he saw a lake not to far from him. The Rebels were gathered around fire, murmuring and laughing.
Now there weren't only about ten rebels, but hundreds. Chester just knew that they had to win this war.
Breakfast was delicious-fish and dry cereal-and everyone enjoyed it. Must have taken forever to catch enough fish to feed hundreds, Chester thought, amazed.
"Everyone gather around!" Shouted a female voice, full of authority and echoing lightly."I am the Rebels' leader. We have picked up a few new recruits on our journey, so now it is time to recap. You may call me Athena. President Athena. Yeah yeah, I know it's the same name as the Greek goddess of war and wisdom and stuff. And yeah, I'm leading a side in war, how funny is it that my name and what I'm doing is so related to her." She grinned and some others in the crowd chuckled.
President Athena continued,"The government and the poor citizens of our country have turned against us. They resent us and want us dead, but so do we. In less than two days we will march into the capital and gun down anyone that is a threat as we travel to The House of the Greats." The House of The Greats used to be called the White House, but a past president changed a bunch of things during his reign. The United States is nothing like it used to be ever since that president took over.
"Once we arrive at The House of The Greats, we will invade and kill anyone and everyone in there. Yes, it sounds barbaric, but it's their faults. They started this war but we will end it. Once we take over The House of The Greats, we will start working to start a new country. A better one. Thank you." President Athena finished her speech and walked toward the crowd,"Let's go."
The Rebels started gathering their weapons and belongings, preparing for the long walk. Chester became more determined than ever to overthrow the corrupt government.
We will arrive tomorrow morning, Chester thought as fear took him over. He actually become a bit scared of the fact. On this night, since they were so close to Washington D.C., they couldn't make any camp fires so it was freezing. The chatter had died down long ago and Chester was sure he was the only one awake. He snuggled closer to his sleepy mother, who still had seemed like a piece of her was missing.
Chester woke up as soon as he heard President Athena give the orders. Then they started their short trip into the capital.
