Yvette

I had forgotten my phone at home today so I was happy to see a text from Amari asking if I was okay and how my day was going. I quickly responded, telling him I was fine and asking why he wasn't at school today.

I dropped my bag in my room and changed my clothes before heading to the kitchen in search of a snack. I swear there's never a time when I'm not hungry. I settled on a cheese sandwich and a glass of milk. I put my snack on the table and opened up my laptop so I could start my homework.

I checked my phone to see if Amari had texted back, but there was nothing. I sighed. Even though I had seen him last night, I still missed him.

Off the corner of my eye I spotted a note from my mom. She and my dad would be working late tonight, so I was on my own. That was fine by me. Considering I was running on four hours of sleep, I was a bit irritable today.

I had an essay due at the end of the week so I went ahead and started. I knew I would get lazy later on in the week and I didn't want to end up handing it in late. I was well into my thoughts well my ringtone interupted me. I looked and saw it was Amari.

Amari

I couldn't believe how stupid Rocky was. How could this nigga be running such a smooth operation, but be so dumb? I had agreed to be his partner, but I had one condition. I wanted Yvette to work with me as well. He thought I was crazy, trying to bring her into this, but I assured him that she would be a perfect asset to our team.

I really thought Yvette would fit in just fine. It's time she stepped out of her shell and started doing some different things, and trying some new shit. I could see her curiousity, and I could see her fear as well. If she'd just push the fear away and embrace her curiousity, she'd be in for the time of her life. I wasn't going to push her though, I mean, street work is dangerous business. But it was only a matter of time before she'd be on board by her own choice.

I checked my phone and saw that Yvette had finally texted back. I figured I'd just call her so I could tell her my good news.

The phone rang for a while before she finally picked up.

"Hello?" She asked.

"Whats up ma?" I asked.

"Nothing, where were you today?"

"I stayed home. I had a meeting with Rocky this evening so I didn't bother going to school."

"Oh, well what are you doing right now?"

"I'm just on my way home now."

"Come over and you can tell me all about your meeting." She said.

"Alright, I'll be there." I said before hanging up.

Half an hour later I was at Yvettes condo, knocking on her down. I couldn't help but have a little smile on my face when she opened the door. She was wearing a loose tank top, clearly with no bra and some tight ass short short. Damn.

"Hey, come in." She said smiling.

I immediately noticed what a nice place she had. It was huge compared to what I lived in. There were paintings and family photos arranged nicely on the walls. Shit, they even had a nice welcome mat. As we walked into the living room, I was even more surprised. There were black leather sofas, a glass coffee table and a big flat screen TV. DAMN, I thought. I knew Yvette came from a well off family, but I didn't realize they were living this good.

"Do you want something to eat or drink?" She asked.

"I'm good ma, thanks." I said.

"So tell me how the meeting went." She said.

"Rocky made me his partner. Somehow he knew about my past in Chicago, and with some new guys trying to invade on his territory, he needs to step his shit up. So we're now working together, and you'll be working alongside me as well."

"I'll what?!" She yelled.

"You're in this with me Yvette. I wasn't kidding about us working together. Shit, I mean, what's a king without a queen?"

"Seriously Amari, I don't know about this. It's not my place."

"And why isn't it your place? Enlighten me."  I said. I knew if I challenged her she'd give me a better answer.

"I don't deal with any of the street shit Amari. I never have, and I really never planned to. I get that you're involved with it, and it's been your lifestyle, but it's not mine."

"Try something new Yvette. You can't tell me you're not the least bit curious."

"Everyday on the news you see some nigga got shot or some nigga was found dead. I don't want that to be us. No curiousity is worth losing our lives."

Damn, she had a point. Anything could happen on the streets, and it was never pretty. It takes a smart nigga to suceed. These niggas you see getting killed are punks, little boys, funny ass niggas. They don't have the smarts to make things work for themselves. They all fuck up and end up dead.  That's just the way the game is. One wrong move could cost you your life. I was too smart for that type of thing. No one could touch me, or Yvette.

"Yvette listen to me, I hear what you're saying, and I get why you're concerned and everything, but you got to just trust me. Those niggas you see on TV don't have the smarts tomake it out there, but I do. Nothing could ever happen to you so long as I'm there."

"I just.... I don't know." She said lowering her head.

Just trust me. To be honest, I think you'll like it. Just move past that fear in your head. I promise it's all going to work out."

The expression on her face softened.

"Alright." She nodded. "I'm in, and this time I mean it."

I laughed. "Good."
