I wake up and stare at my LA-poster. I think about what my mom wrote in the notebook.
Don't let anyone stop you from accomplishing your dreams.
She believes in me. Or believed at least.
I get up and go downstairs in my pyjama's. Mason is sitting in the couch, watching tv. He looks a bit sad.'Good morning!', I say happily.
'Good morning, sweetheart', Jenny says.
'Morning', Mason mumbles.
'You okay, Masy?', I ask.
'Yeah.'
'Mason?'
'What?', he asks annoyed.
'What's the matter?'
'I think you can answer that for yourself.'
He stands up and walks upstairs. As he passes me, his shoulder bumps into mine. He doesn't say sorry, but just keeps on walking.
'What was that about?', I ask Jenny who heard everything from the kitchen.
'I have no idea. He's been this way all morning. I think something happened with him and Karla. She was here yesterday and she left quite angry.'
I take out my phone and text Karla for an explanation as I make myself some brunch.
'I don't need to explain anything to you. You're the reason we're in this fight', she texts back.
What!? What do I have to do with THEIR fight!? Is it something I said? Something I did? I think about it all day, but I can't figure out what it is.
Mason's been on his room for the entire day and I'm starting to get worried. I have to know what it is that I did. I knock on his door.
'Mason? It's me. Please let me in.'
I can hear him sob.
'Go away!', he screams.
I can notice the anger and fear in his voice.
'Mason, please!'
I try to open the door, but it's locked.
'Just leave!'
I concerns me how scared he sounds. I can here him take off his belt and moving a chair around. Oh, HELL NO!
'Mason! Open this door RIGHT NOW!'
I can not let this happen. Not him. I start jumping against the door, hoping that it'll open. Then I realize something. Mason's bedroom door is the same one as mine. I take the key off of my door and put it in the lock on Mason's door. I can hear Mason crying out loud. He is screaming that I should stay out. Jenny comes running upstairs and asks what's going on.
'If I don't open this door in time, you might not have a son anymore', I reply softly.
'What!?', Jenny screams.
Mason is suddenly stops yelling at us. I open the door and I see exactly what I didn't to see. Mason is hanging from the ceiling. His belt around his neck and his chair laying on the floor. He has tears all over his face. I've never seen him like this before. His body is slowly spinning around. Jenny and I run up to him and try to get him down. I grab his legs and lift him up a little, so that he isn't chocking anymore. Jenny opens the belt and we lay him down on his bed. I tell Jenny to call an ambulance. I try to remember CPR. I sit down on my knees, next to him and place my hands on his chest. I start pumping. I can hear Jenny crying on the phone. I try to focus on Mason. I place my lips on his and blow. I try to blow the life back into his body. I start pumping again, then mouth-to-mouth again. After a couple of times he starts coughing. I sit up and smile. Jenny grabs his hand and starts smiling as well.
'We thought we lost you, buddy', I say as I smile at him.
'What do you want now?', he asks sarcastically.
'Mason! Anna just saved your life!', Jenny says.
'Do you think I wanted that!? Do you think I wanted to live, mom!?', Mason yells.
We can hear the sirens of the ambulance come closer.
'Please tell me that's not for me', Mason says annoyed.
Jenny bows her head. Mason sighs.
What's the matter with this guy? Mason used to be a friendly, happy, thankful person. Now he's being an annoying, arrogant douchebag. Something happened. Something changed him. But what?
