Senior prom.
Two words that, in most movies or books, represented the night that every teenage girl has dreamed of their entire lives.
Not me.
I was never a huge school dance kind of girl, and I barely went to any in North Carolina. But now that I saw the huge, elaborate "asks" that everyone did here, I was liking it less and less.
But my friends would not shut up about it.
"Who are you going with?" Bella asked Tessa eagerly.
"I don't know! I think Tommy's going to ask me, but he hasn't said anything about it in a while." She replied.
Why don't you just ask him yourself?
"Have you found your dress yet?" Siena asked Riley.
"I've gotten it down to 4. But I'm just going to order all 4 and then return the ones that I don't want." She explained.
Four fucking dresses?
"Who's organizing the bus?" Lindsey wondered.
"Oh, Ella and I will. But like a hundred people want to get on the list, so we need to narrow it down and also make dinner reservations and pick a place for pictures." Natalie told her.
Huh?
I wasn't even sure if I was going yet, let alone what dress I would wear, what bus I would go on, where we would take pictures.
I didn't even know if Myles had wanted to go. When I asked him last, he had just said, "Whatever you want, babe." But he was busy playing Xbox so I don't think he heard me.
I wondered if he would talk about asking me before he did. What if he just assumed that I wanted to go? What if he asked me in front of a bunch of people and I couldn't tell him that I didn't really want to go?
I decided that I would tell him when I got home. He said he would come over later, but I haven't seen him all day.
"Where's Myles?" Ryann asked me.
"I don't know," I shrugged. "He's supposed to come over to my house later, but I haven't seen him here yet, and he hasn't texted me, which is weird."
She brushed it off. "Whatever. Are you excited for prom?" Her eyes sparkled.
I resisted the urge to groan. "Um, sure, I guess. I don't really know if I want to go, though. School dances aren't really my thing."
Her eyes widened for a fraction of a second before going back to their normal size. "No, no, no, no! You have to go! It's like a rite of passage. Come on, it'll be fun, ASB has been planning it for ages," she pleaded with me.
"Maybe. I might have to talk to Myles and see if he even wants to go. The more I think about it, the more of a hassle it seems."
"Yeah," her voice was a squeak now. "I'll see you later, S, bye!" She scurried off before I got a chance to ask her why she was acting so weird.
