Katie's POV:Flashback:
I'm sitting on the floor in our old apartment, I was trying to get that pencil to move. I'd watched Zatanna do crazy things with just her voice. I wanted to do the same so badly. I guess it was that desire, the need that coursed through me, that made the pencil float to the roof. The wanting to be like her, like Robin. The wanting to be a hero.
"Mom! Look! Look what I did!" I exclaimed, grinning like a scarecrow.
She glanced up from the kitchen and gasped. She staggered backward and placed her hand over her heart.
"Get out." Her voice was barely audible and I wasn't sure I'd heard her right.
"What?" I needed to clarify. I can't get kicked out! I'm only twelve!
"Get. Out." She was speaking harshly now. Tears were pricking my eyes.
"Why?"
"You witch, get out. Now!" I'm not a witch. Am I? I wanted to help other people, and I'm getting kicked out. I doesn't make sense. Why?
"But-"
"Out! Don't come back!"
She didn't even look sad. Alright, fine. I never really got along with her anyways. But what about Dad? What would he say? A fire started to blaze in my stomach. This woman was ruining my life yet again. But if I left... If I left, she couldn't anymore.
"Fine. You never loved me." Holy crap, why did I say that?! Well, it's not like she could punish me now anyways. Oh well.
New Flashback:
I'm standing on the edge of a rooftop. I look down and see people beneath me. I drop down, landing elegantly on the ground. No one noticed me as I skillfully grabbed someone's wallet. I left their ID alone, only taking the money. I had wanted to be a hero and help, but I didn't have much choice in pick-pocketing other people. I didn't want to starve to death, I was small for my age as it was. Living on a rooftop in Gotham for two years does that to you.
I dropped the wallet and climbed up the wall onto the top of the building.
I walked over to a loose tile and lifted it up. Underneath was a costume that I'd sewn when I wasn't stealing or at school, learning stuff that was useless to anyone living on the streets.
I'd caught wind of Robin getting kidnapped and wanted to help him.
Timeskip:
"Um, no thanks. I'm happy where I am."
Just as I said it, Deathstroke threw a knife into my side and it stayed there. I dropped to my knees.
"Are you still happy? Foolish hero."
End flashback
I woke up, Robin was shaking my shoulder.
"What?" I was confused. I mean yeah, it sucks having these bad dreams but they weren't worth waking me up for.
"You were crying." He said.
"Oh. No, I'm fine, just a dream right?"
"Yeah, I guess."
Okay, this isn't my best chapter, but I thought I'd give a little bit more backstory to Katie. The next chapter will be better. I hope. ;)
