Something Strange

I wanted to write something with a little bit more humor in it, because it's winter break for me. Which means holidays! Yay! Except I've been babysitting all week. *slams head into desk from annoyance caused by sibling* Gah, but it's not that bad. Actually, yes it is. I re-watched Suicide Squad though, that was a plus.

Anyways I just want to say that Dick's actually around fourteen because I never actually specified before now. This chapter gets a bit weird, just bear with me okay? You'll be glad you did, it's funny. (I think)

Katie's POV

I don't know how long we stayed there, but it could have been forever for all I cared. I finally  had a friend that trusted me. School doesn't count, everyone will just stab you in the back at some point or another. I guess we were bonded by trauma or something? I don't know or care. All I know is that Dick trusts me and that I won't let him down.

A small part of my mind is reeling with excitement, I've fought along side my idol and now he trusted me with his emotions, and he's hugging me. Oh my god. This is so cool! But I hide it as best I can, he needed my support right now. He was letting himself break and I shouldn't treat him like some sort celebrity crush. That would be rude and stupid. He'd hate me. I don't want him to hate me.

"Thanks, I'm not used to-" He whispered in my ear. I cut him off, saying "It's alright, you can't hide it all the time."

"Yeah, that's true." His arms briefly tightened around me before he let go. I dropped my arms and watched as he wiped the remaining tears from his face. Then he smacked his forehead.

"Dummy!"

I was taken aback by his self-directed insult.

"What?"

"Wally's coming over today!"

"Who?"

"Wally! My friend! I'm sorry, I totally forgot!" He was sorry about that? That his friend was coming over? That's kinda stupid, I just showed up. That's not  his fault.

"I should probably go shower and get dressed huh?"

"Yeah, probably."

He walked over to his closet and tossed me a black leather jacket, some jeans and a red t-shirt. I caught the jacket but dropped the jeans and shirt. Oops. I picked them up.

"Sorry, they might be a bit big. I'll go shopping with you later and get some clothes that'll actually fit you." A guy willing to shop with me was something new. Or to shop in general. He's awesome.

"Okay, but um... the bathroom..." I trailed off a little awkwardly.

"Down the hall and on the left."  He said distractedly as he moved around the room.

"Thanks."

"No problem."

I followed his directions and sure enough, I found the bathroom. It was simple and a mirror hung on the wall above the sink. The shower/bathtub was at the far end. There was a blue and black striped shower curtain hanging in front of it.

I undressed and turned on the hot water, stepping in. Subconsciously I started humming my favorite song, Stormy. I'd first heard while browsing through YouTube one day. What a happy coincidence. Then I started singing as I rinsed shampoo from my hair.

"Boom, crash all night, you scream, we fight. These words they strike like lightning. Dark skies tell no lies, like your stormy eyes. If it's cold tonight, I'm here now..."

I sang my way through my mental playlist that had an odd mix of music. As I washed the conditioner from my brown hair, I started a song I'd heard in a Disney movie. My mom hadn't been big on movies but when she would go out shopping, my dad and I would secretly watched Aladdin, every time. It was our secret.

Mentally I played Aladdin's part, then started singing Jasmine's.

"A whole new world, a dazzling place I never knew. But when I'm way up here, it's crystal clear, That now I'm in a whole new world with you..."

Unlike every other song, I had memorized every word, every note and even the instruments.

Soon I turned the water off and dried myself off with a towel. I wrapped it around my hair as I got dressed in the jeans, shirt and jacket, but continued to sing. My voice echoed around the small room. Then I pulled my hair from the towel and brushed it, then pulled it into a braid across my shoulder.

I gathered the towel and my dirty clothes and unlocked the door. The door swung open in my hand and I screamed, seeing Dick standing there.

"Oh my god! What the- You almost gave me a heart attack! What were you doing?!"

He shuffled his feet.

"I was listening to you sing."

"What?!"

"I heard you down the hall. You have a really nice voice. And maybe I sang along a bit..."

I face palmed. He has got to be kidding me.

"You're kidding me." I spoke between my fingers.

"No."

Dun, dun dun!! Awkward.
