Darwin Lewis
Darwin was cold. Colder than he'd ever been in his life. He wasn't even sure if he was alive. He was lying, somewhere, surrounded by a darkness that was yet to consume him. It was just waiting for the right moment; like bird to prey. He was bleeding from somewhere. His own blood was surrounding his entire body.
"Darwin?" Something tall and bony approached his body. He stared at the unrecognizable shadow with weak eyes. Whatever it was, it knew him. At least, by name.
Darwin glanced up at the pale moon. A beam of light seemed to open up and illuminated the figure now peering down at him. It was Logan. Sort of.
Even though Darwin was barely alive, he could see that there was something wrong with his friend. Logan's eyes were a lifeless blue surrounded by dark circles. His skin was blotchy and stretched against his bony limbs. He looked dead.
"L-Logann?" Darwin muttered in a raspy voice, something that he had learned was his own.
The ghostly Logan leaned down further, bending his knees. "Yeah buddy?" His voice was gone. It was only a pale whisper that could easily be lost in the wind.
"What happened? To me, I mean."
"I'm sorry, Darwin. I honestly don't know. One second you were fine, then you went all crazy Demon, dude." Logan flashed a smile that didn't reach any features except the upturned corners of his lips.
"Am I bleeding?" He asked, staring at the blood around him.
"No." Logan said, concern lacing his eyes.
"What about-?" Darwin stopped. The blood was gone. He felt the ground that was damp from the rain that continued to pour.
"What about what?" Logann was staring at Darwin's eyes with his own faded ones.
"Nothing." Darwin shook his head. "Are you okay?" He changed the subject as Logan helped him stand. He shivered in the hospital gown that was torn and weathered.
Logan hung his head as they began walking deeper into the woods. He was silent for a while with nothing but the rain pushing at Darwin's ears.
"I left you." He muttered, his voice was almost lost in the rain. "I ran away. I swore I wouldn't leave you, but I just got so scared, I didn't know what to do..." Logan couldn't finish his sentence. He ran a bony hand through his wet hair as the moonlight etched deep shadows in his face, causing his eyes to appear dead.
"But are you okay?" Darwin repeated. "What happened to you?"
Logan closed his eyes and stopped. He fell slowly to his knees and cursed at everything. It was a quiet whisper that contained little emotion. He didn't looked at Darwin.
"All my life, I've run from everything." He said, small tears making their way down his cheeks. "I've wanted nothing but to escape. To free myself from my problems. My fears. I ran because I was afraid."
Darwin knelt beside his friend. He placed his hand on Logan's back and felt his spine move with each shaky breath. "It's okay."
"No. It isn't. I can't run anymore, Darwin. I can't." He shook his head. He lifted his head and faced the sky, still in his knees. "I ran from you. I left you to die with that Demon because I'm a coward. I'm a pitiful piece of trash."
