Darwin Lewis

Darwin opened his eyes. It was cold and wet. He felt glass cutting into his arms as he tried to shift positions. He was confused. Darwin felt like he had a headache everywhere.

He heard the distant sound of sirens. The rain was leaking in through the smashed roof and broken windows. It seeped through Darwin's clothes and chilled his skin. He was going to freeze to death if he stayed here.

Darwin pushed himself up even though shards of glass cut into his hands. He crawled from the wreckage and saw Denise's body lying halfway through the windshield. She was bruised and broken.

The sirens became louder. Police cars and ambulances pulled up, surrounding Darwin.
Men and women get out of the cars. What Darwin saw registered in his head.

"Denise!" He began to bawl. Darwin attempted to lunge towards his sister's body.
A few police officers grabbed him and held him back.

"Let. Me. Go!" Darwin felt a surge of strength pulse through him. He ripped himself from the arms of the officers and jumped to his sister.

He grabbed Denise's outstretched arms and pulled her from the car. She was on her stomach. Darwin turned her over and bawled. There was no way she could be alive.

Her face was scratched. Her chest was sunken in, signs of broken ribs. Darwin tried to feel for a pulse, but he couldn't feel anything over his own screaming. "Denise! Please wake up!" He shook her.

Officers came up behind Darwin and strapped him Darwin to a gurney. He tried to pry himself loose, but his strength had disappeared. He felt Defeat creep into his mind. One of the most controlling of his Demons.

Darwin cried as the sirens wailed and people scrambled to clean up the debris. "My sister." Darwin tried to scream but it came out as a hoarse whisper. "Someone help my sister." He cried.

Darwin was hoisted into the back of the ambulance. The doors were shut and his world went dark.

************

Darwin looked asleep on his hospital room with his crying father beside him. Darwin was really only visiting his closest Demons.

Darwin was in a cage with ominous, black figures surrounding him. He was small and insignificant compared to the Demons. Darwin was naked and gagged. He was laying on the stone floor of the cage.

'Get up, Darwin.' Fear lifted his hand and Darwin rose with it. Wearily, he look up at the cold, red eyes of Fear. Darwin was cold and tired and drained. He didn't know how much longer he could keep this up.

'What you see before you, my fellow Demons, is the Soul of Darwin Lewis. This is what holds us in, this tired shell of loss. Drained of all hope.' Fear laughed at the limp and broken teenager. Darwin didn't try to fight. He didn't try to yell.

'Given up, have we?' Defeat questioned, 'My favorite.' He snickered. Darwin waited patiently for the torment to be over. He didn't want to struggle any longer.

He refused.
***********

Darwin woke up in cold sweat. He shivered in his hospital gown. His father was startled awake by his son's sudden movement.
