Eryn Foster
An uneasy feeling had settled in Eryn's stomach. Something about Kayden Van Din had changed. Almost as though a gear shifted or her train of thought changed direction. Whatever it was, it made Eryn keep her distance. She followed at a decent pace behind her and watched her movements. Kayden didn't seem to be fully there or her mind was in another place. Eryn stomach growled in pain and her legs ached from the hike. For some reason, Kayden seemed to have taken a longer way through thicker woods.
"You do know where you're going, right?" Eryn asked. It was silent for a moment.
"Of course, Foster." Came the response that sounded almost like she was in another world where there were no problems. A low rush of wind reminded Eryn of the late-winter weather. Her wings perched heavy on her back, causing aches to spread throughout her shoulders. She watched the redhead wonder along her path and followed just out of lunging distance.
"I'm following some girl I just met through a secluded forest." Eryn rolled her eyes. The redhead was muttering things to herself that Eryn didn't want to understand. She continued to follow her, the city lights nearing on the horizon. While her own stomach groaned in pain, the thought of giving food to Logan made her want to throw up. He didn't deserve to live.
In her eyes, he was a reckless mistake that crumbled people's trust. And because of it, he had to pay the price. Eryn didn't fully understand the whole running at the speed of sound thing or why he was wasting away, but she knew he deserved whatever punishment he got. She hated him. She thought he was twisted and wrong. The snap of a twig brought Eryn from her thoughts.
She looked up from the ground to see Kayden crouching low to the ground.
"What are you-?"
"Shhh! Unless you want to die, get down." She hissed. Hesitantly, she followed her orders. It was late afternoon and they were feet from a highway hiding behind a bush. It made no sense.
"What are we doing?" I whispered frantically. "This is s-"
"Shut up, Foster. I'm saving your butt." She adjusted herself lower to the ground and put he hands to the ground as if she were about to sprint. "There's something out here that belongs to me. It'll kill you if it finds you."
"If." Eryn muttered. "Why can't I just flap my birdy wings and leave you at peace with whoever it is?"
Before she could respond, Kayden's breath hitched and her limbs tensed. "It already knows you're here."
*******
Nyre was in the car with Matthew and Seth. They had remained silent for a majority of the ride except to give a regular friendly hello to the familiar stranger in the back of the car.
"Who is she?" Seth muttered to his best friend sitting beside him. The answer was obvious, but it didn't feel right.
"It's Eryn, Seth. Who else?" Matthew gripped the steering wheel and ran his hand through his long hair. "Right?" He asked himself. Seth took occasional glances at her through his rearview mirror and winced. The jean short, black tank tops, and neon crop tops was not the Eryn he knew. She wore faded jeans and flannels with old vans or converse. Whoever it was in the back of the car, it was not Eryn Foster.
