“Cattle and brides don’t mix” shouted Dawn’s father, watching horrified as Dawn tried to lasso a calf.
“What’s going on Dad?” Stephen called from the barn, running out to see what all the fuss was about.
“Your baby sister is trying to break a limb before her wedding day. I thought you boys would be more responsible and not let your sister try any fool hardy things like this before her big day.” Steven Grey spoke harshly to his eldest son Stephen. He was disappointed and annoyed that Stephen had allowed his sister to try a stunt like that.
“Dad I didn’t even know she was on a horse. I never saw her saddle up.” Stephen protested.
“Well get her off the damn horse now!” Steve demanded, and who’s that woman sitting with her legs inside the fence, doesn’t she realise that’s dangerous? You boys know better, sort it out.”
Vaughn rode up, just as his father was storming off to the house, “Hey Stephen, what’s up with Dad he looks really mad?”
“Our irresponsible sister …. Need I say more? I’ll be glad when she’s married and is someone else’s problem. I’m tired of taking the brunt of Dad’s anger for her.” Stephen scowled as he marched towards Dawn.
Vaughn coughed, trying to disguise a laugh, “Sorry big brother, but you did take on our baby sister as your responsibility when Aunt Eve left.”
Stuart came running down from the house, “Hey guys, why is Dad so mad? He just smashed a glass into the fireplace. Thought it best I left till he calmed down.”
Vaughn looked at his younger brother and nodded his head in the direction of Dawn. They both watched as Stephen climbed onto the railing shouting at Dawn to get off her horse.
Dawn raced up to Stephen, stopping abruptly causing dust and debris to fly up at her brother.
“Don’t be such a stick in the mud Steffy!” Dawn remarked laughing.
“It’s not funny Dawn, what if you break something; you’ll look pretty stupid in a cast with your wedding dress. Dad is fuming and you know that means we all get it in the neck. I really wish you’d think about your actions first.” Stephen said glaring at her, “Now off, and I don’t want to see you riding again till after the wedding and don’t even think about trying to lasso anything either!”
Annie jumped off the fence and walked towards Stephen and Dawn.
“Hi I’m Annie and you must be Stephen, the oldest brother.” Annie said smiling at Stephen.
Annie’s remark made him feel like a grandfather, “And who might you be?” he asked directing his question at both of the girls.
“Oh, Steffy this is my best friend and Maid of Honour, Annie.” Dawn replied.
“Really?” Stephen looked from Dawn to Annie, “So when did all this happen? I thought you only had bridesmaids.”
Dawn and Annie burst out laughing.
“What’s so funny?” Vaughn asked as he joined the group.
“Dawn has a new best friend who is now her Maid of Honour!” Stephen remarked, “But I have no idea what is so funny.”
Vaughn looked at the two girls who were giggling hysterically, “Okay you two, how did you meet and it would be nice if you shared the joke.”
“We met while I was cutting up my wedding dress.” Dawn replied.
“I helped Dawn cut her wedding dress into puzzle pieces.” Annie remarked amid laughter.
Vaughn and Stephen looked at each other and then back at the girls.
