Chapter 36 - "It's You"

Chris banged on Luke’s door with his fist. “Open up I know you’re in there.” He shouted through the door.

Luke opened the door slowly and before he could open his mouth Chris punched him. He fell backwards holding his nose.

“What the hell… you’ve broken my nose.” 

“You’re lucky that’s not all I’ve broken.” 

Luke struggled to get to his feet cupping his bleeding nose in his hand. Before he could stand up Chris shoved him back down onto the floor. 

“Don’t move till I’ve finished with you.” 

“What? What have I done?” 

“You bloody well know what you’ve done, or do I have to spell it out for you in between punches.” 

“Chris, I’m not the one who walked out… it was your sister who left after she kicked me twice. I’ll be lucky if I can ever have kids after that.” Blood was now dripping through Luke’s fingers onto the carpet. “Come on Chris, I need a towel. I’m not the one at fault here.”

Luke tried again to get up and Chris shoved a boot into his chest forcing him to lie flat on his back.

“You’ve been sleeping with Annie. You’re the other guy she’s got the ‘hots’ for.”

“What? What are you talking about? I never slept with Annie. I promise Chris I never did.”

Chris’s boot pressed down on Luke’s chest. “She told me there was someone else. That’s why she couldn’t be with me. After the way you behaved with her at lunch and Dawn leaving you. It all makes sense now. You’re the bastard she’s been shacking up with.”

“Chris, that’s not true.”

“Shut up. I’m not listening to any of your lies. You two have been sleeping together behind Dawn’s back. You bloody well deserve each other.”

Luke tried again to move out from under Chris’s boot but gave up after Chris applied more pressure.

“Chris, why don’t you just ask Annie? I’m struggling to breathe, please Chris.”

Chris backed off and moved backwards towards the door.

“If you hadn’t been sleeping with her why did you call Dawn, Annie in the middle of…? Uggggg…. Don’t even want to think about it. I’m glad she kicked you and I hope she’s put you out of action permanently.” He said as he wrenched the door open and taking one last look back at Luke said, “Us… our friendship is over… and don’t you ever set foot on the ranch again. Go near my sister and I’ll break both your arms and legs next time.” He stormed out and slammed the door.

Luke struggled to his feet and went to the bathroom to wash his face. He looked into the mirror to see the damage and knew he had to get medical attention. Both his eyes were bruised and purple. He would have to find Annie and … he wasn’t quite sure what he was going to do. What had she said?

Dawn and the twins were on the balcony watching the sunset over the sea whilst sipping champagne. Dawn laughed.

“What’s so funny?” James asked.

“Whoever thought I’d spend my honeymoon with not one but two gorgeous guys. I sure am the luckiest girl in the world.”

“I think we’re the lucky ones.” James said winking at her.

“Agreed.” Andy said. “More champagne Dawn?” He tipped the bottle up only to find it was empty. “Damn we’re out of liquid. Shall I order another bottle?”
