A/N: Idk how you would have got here without knowing this but yanno, trigger warning for suicide.
It had been a long time coming really, Kya knew that. Ezra was bound to get mad eventually, but tonight of all nights was not what she had planned. Please not tonight when Kya knew what the night was meant to lead to. Kya turned and looked at her sister, fuming, red in the face. Her hands shook by her sides.
"Just out," Kya said weakly. She'd told Ezra that before, the first time she had caught her going out. They'd gone full circle now. First time, last time, what was the difference?
Ezra wasn't going to dismiss it like before though. She wasn't going to sit back and watch. Why now? Why did it have to be today and not any other day? Kya wanted to know why Ezra decided to put up a fight just after the battle had been lost. It was too late now.
"Why?" Ezra asked. If she spoke too loudly she'd wake up the twins, but she was pretty close.
Kya opened her mouth, and then closed it again. "You wouldn't understand."
"No," Ezra stepped forward, pointing at her, "no, you won't let me understand. I've been waiting for you, patiently wondering if you'd ever decide to tell me, but you won't. You won't even talk to me if I try to ask you about it!"
Kya shrank back. "I don't want you to understand."
"Why not?" Her voice cracked a little. She shifted her weight, as if contemplating moving forward again.
"Because if you ever understand this, you're in too deep," Kya said quietly, "don't you ever tell me that you know what's going on in my head because if you do I have some very grave concerns."
Ezra started forward, and then pulled herself back. "You think pretty badly of yourself for someone who got out of a mental hospital alive," she scowled. It was the anger talking, but it hurt like the twist of a knife anyway. Kya wasn't sure what that was supposed to mean.
"You would too if you knew me." Kya turned to open the door.
In a snap of movement, Ezra threw herself at the door and pushed it shut. She was face to face with Kya now, close enough to feel the fear. "Don't tell me I don't know you," Ezra hissed through gritted teeth, "don't you dare make it sound like I haven't been trying to get through to you."
"You can try all you want," Kya was almost laughing, "I'm not something you can get through to anymore."
Ezra exhaled sharply. "Why do you insist on acting like you're all alone? Don't you see that everyone around you is trying to help you?"
Kya did laugh this time, a toxic, melting splutter of a laugh. "Fuck you. Half of the people I know care about me because it's their job to. Mum and dad are getting so sick of trying to pretend like they don't just want me to switch up and suddenly be normal. Does no one remember that I have eyes? I can tell when you want me to go away."
"You think your family doesn't care about you?" It came out like a whisper, weak and hurt.
"Mum and dad don't. The twins only care because they don't know they shouldn't. You-"
"What about me?" Ezra interrupted. This was shouting. This was anger. "Tell me. Do ou think I don't care? Is this what not caring looks like?"
Kya just shook her head. "You care, but I think you should stop."
"I think you should stop too, Kya," Ezra yelled, "stop being selfish. What about me? You might have given up on yourself, but have you given up on me? If you won't do it for you, do it for me!"
