Your POV:
Aspen swerved the black SUV into the empty parking lot of what appeared to be an old neglected Bed and Breakfast called "Rebecca's Hotel". The majority of the neon sign was out though so it read "ecHo".Aspen grabbed a duffle bag and backpack from the back seat before unbuckling his seatbelt and getting out of the car wordlessly. I hesitantly followed suit.
Closed rusty red curtains covered every window and, from the outside, I couldn't see a single light coming from the inside. The structure itself looked like it needed major repairs and it seemed to be rundown and old fashioned. There was hardly anything nearby though besides a vast flat cornfield that stretched across the horizon. Therefore, the hotel probably didn't get much money since there weren't any travelers.
The whole scene felt eerie. A cold chill went down my spine as I felt cold invisible eyes on me from the cornfield behind our backs. The noise of an old rusty swing of the swing set outside the hotel rocking added to the suspense of the moment. The creaking of the metal made me feel even more uncomfortable in the outdoors.
It was pitch black, chilly, breezy, and raining. Every noise was crisp and clear.
The pitter-pattering of the rain.
The howling of the wind.
The sound of a branch snapping.
Aspen's face bathed in the silver moonlight of the full moon, his blue eyes dark in the shadows of the night.
"Aspen, what is this place?" I whispered, wrapping my arms around myself. My hairs rose on my bare arms, forming goosebumps on my skin.
"A safe place," Aspen responded. He fell silent, a gush of wind hitting us. His face was stone frozen, his expression serious.
"Well it's a bloody f*cking scary one."
Aspen ignored me, pushing his damp dark brown hair out of his face. Drops of rain rolled down the curves of my arms as my brother gently grabbed my wrist, pulling me to the front entrance with his free hand.
We were drenched head to toe but I barely seemed to notice because of the racing sensation of my heart. Fear rose within me. My muscles were tense, my bottom lip was quivering, and jolts of energized electricity shot through me, pricking and tickling the nerves throughout my body.
Aspen seemed unfazed as well. His eyes were lost as he twisted the golden door knob and opened the door, its red paint chipped and peeling. It was if he was in another world- in a solemn trance- inside of his own head. Aspen had always been like this. He tended to lock away any negative emotions and plaster masks to his face as protection. Whenever he was in a bad situation, he faced it by pretending it wasn't there, by acting like he was somewhere else, at another time. This time, however, he was more serious than I had ever seen him. He was so tense, anxious, and deep in thought that I could feel it radiating off of him, despite his expression appearing emotionless and calm.
"Welcome to Rebecca's Hotel! How may I help you?" a lady at the front desk said. The woman was quite short but appeared to be in her mid-20s. Her dark brown hair had purple highlights and was cut into a pixie cut. Her long arms were decorated with beautifully detailed tattoos, including one of a gorgeous fairy or winged sprite on her left bicep, which seemed to stick out among the others. It was art.
Aspen held out an arm, signaling me to stay back and let him arrange everything. I nodded and stayed behind.
Aspen approached the desk, flicking his eyes around the large empty front room, glancing to see if anyone was near by. "Echo," he whispered just loud enough for the three of us to here.
Echo?
The woman smiled and winked. "I knew it. I could tell that the two of you have magicks," the lady responded, chuckling. Her name tag read 'Amber'.
"Have magicks?" I questioned curiously. Aspen shrugged it off.
"Amber, do you remember me? You probably won't recognize me by the way my whole physical appearance looks at this moment, but can you tell by my eyes?" Aspen said.
Amber was silent for a few moments as she examined Aspen's deep blue eyes. A small smile formed on her thick lips. "Ah, Aspen! How could I forget those eyes? We've all missed you. It's been so long, I-" Amber paused, her eye catching on me. She stared at me intently for a couple of seconds before turning back to Aspen. "I see. Your sister is here but I'm sure I can arrange something for the current circumstances. I'll do what I can."
"Why did she stop speaking when she saw me?" I wondered to myself.
"Yes, of course. We are in a dire situation so anything will do. I brought my own weapons so we should be fine in that department but we need a place to take refuge. We'll have to make some adjustments but I would rather have her be safe with the harsh truth than dead and in ignorant bliss," Aspen said. It was obvious they were talking about me, but they were unwavered by my presence. I could tell that the situation was serious so I brushed it off.
In fact, the situation seemed a little too serious. Amber seemed to be a cool and calm person but in the corner of my eye, I saw a bead of sweat roll down the side of her forehead. Aspen's words were harsh, truthful, cautious, and solemn. There was no room for white lies.
"Of course, Aspen," Amber murmured. She fell silent, biting her bottom lip, unable to form any other words. She slid a dusty book from the shelf and opened it, flipping through the pages. She tapped a pen against the desk before finally underlining something on one of the pages. A look of relief swept across her face as she put a hand on her hip. "Thank goodness, we have a room. Welcome to Echo, Y/N."
