When we get to the police station, I'm extremely on edge at the sight of everyone giving me nervous looks.
Ryan pushes past them to explain the situation to me.
"Drew, an article has been posted on one of the most read papers and a handful of websites about what happened. I'm sorry but the writers somehow got your information and picture." He hesitantly explains.
"Show me the articles." I growl.
"Drew, are you sure you want to see them?" Kier softly asks. "You don't need to torture yourself over this."
"Kier, I appreciate you trying to protect me but I need to see it." I point out.
Ryan nods understandingly and guides me to a computer everyone is huddled around. I tense up at the headline.
"Unstable and unrestrained!"
I keep reading the article as it goes on to call me a madman amongst other things. The whole article goes on to mention my parents' names.
"I need to go." I murmur.
"Drew, wait, I'm coming with you." Kier calls, slowing me down a bit.
Just when we're about to leave, Laurence's voice calls after me. "Woolnough, we need a word."
I hesitate in stopping. "It can wait."
"That's a direct order, Woolnough. I can understand your state of mind but this isn't worth losing your badge over." Laurence warns.
I slump my shoulders forwards in defeat and follow Laurence to his office. Kier politely waits outside.
"Drew, I understand that you're furious about those articles but they are popping up everywhere. There's no way we could shut any of them down without having demonstrations saying that the police are corrupt and controlling the information received by the public. You and I know how far that will go and right now everyone's too quick to yell police brutality for you to take any action no matter how controlled or objective you are." He points out.
"They talked to my mother and put her name in the article!" I growl.
"There's nothing we can do about that Drew." He simply states.
"I was told they were under police protection. Which officers stepped back and allowed this to happen?" I demand.
"The protective detail was removed once you were dropped from the case." He plainly explains.
"You didn't think I had a right to know?" I confront.
"Don't make a scene out of it." He sternly warns.
I'm disgusted with him.
"Even though I know you're unstable right now, I trust that Dr. Illingworth can help you so I'm going to let you continue investigating the case you're currently assigned to now before I put you on leave until everything dies down." He stoically states before excusing me.
"Captain, I'm nothing without this job. Working cases is my coping mechanism." I point out.
"Then tell me why I've got a number of people who want to have you fired for assaulting them?" He confronts directly.
"They probably read that goddamned article and want to get in on it by suing me first!" I snap.
"Drew, leave and let me sort this out." He quietly tells me.
I glare at him for a while before storming out of the room, slamming the door behind me.
Everyone in the police station gives me an anxious look for a moment, shocked that I've just slammed the door between me and Captain Laurence.
"What?" I hiss at them. "Don't you all have a job to be getting on with?"
They awkwardly look down at their desks.
"Drew? What are you doing? Are you trying to get arrested or lose your job?" Kier warns.
I simply ignore him. "Do we still have that son of a bitch in this building?" I growl before storming towards the cells.
Kier follows me, desperately trying to calm me down without success until I get to a small high security cell.
Shane looks up curiously at me before grinning. "I knew I'd be seeing you one more time before I'm transferred to your least favourite prison."
"I don't have time for this. You're going to give me the name of the man who shot my partner or you're going to bleed to death." I threaten.
His grin grows wider. "Do you really think I'm afraid of my own blood?" He taunts.
"I think you don't want to die!" I snarl.
"Drew, I really think you should calm down." Kier fearfully tries.
"Oh that's cute, you're spending time with his brother. Why don't you introduce us, lamb?" Shane teases.
I instantly slam my fists against his cell. "I'm going to kill you. Understand? I'm going to watch you die!"
"Drew, stop it before I go get other officers to escort you out of here." Kier warns.
"Actually, why don't you do that? I can use the time you're gone to take care of this scum!" I snap at him.
Kier looks slightly hurt to have me be so harsh to him but leaves quickly.
I don't have long, I can shoot Shane now!
Shane sits down patiently as if he's waiting for me to make my move. This makes me snap so I pull out my gun and point it at him.
"I want to see you on your knees with your hands up! Do it now or else I'll shoot!" I yell at him.
He laughs at the sight of my hands trembling on the gun but does what I request. "Does this make you feel powerful, lamb?" He asks with a smirk.
"Shut your mouth!" I snarl.
"I can almost smell the fear on you. You really taste so irresistible when you're scared. I just wish I could've gotten to one of the good bits. Your cheek, liver, even all the meat on your thighs." He whispers.
"Shut up!" I yell at him, just about to pull the trigger when I'm grabbed from behind and disarmed.
"Detective Woolnough, don't do this." The familiar voice of Ryan tells me.
I completely break down into desperately thrashing, screaming curses and crying. Shane laughs as I'm dragged away, making me feel so much more vulnerable and pathetic.
