I awoke to the warmth of Gladion's arms around me, Arcanine still sleeping soundly. I felt Gladion take a few deep breaths, and I craned my neck to find the blonde's emerald eyes open.
"Morning, princess," he murmured groggily, letting go of me to stretch his arms and legs. I gave him a suspicious glare.
"'Princess'?" I echoed suspiciously, not used to hearing words like that from him. Gladion's lips simply curled into a devious smile as he sat up next to me.
"Whatever, I tried being nice," he sighed in mock disappointment. "The least you could do is say 'good morning' back."
"Fiiiiine," I groaned dramatically. He watched me as I bode him a "good morning" in a more playful tone than usual.
"We should probably be on our way," he prodded, his expression reverting back to its resting stoic state as a more serious air came about him. "We've still got a lot more mountain to climb."
"Alright," I agreed as I brought myself to my feet, feeding Arcanine a pokebean. The large Pokémon spun around happily as I gave him a few more. In the meantime, Gladion opened his pouch and pulled out a few tea biscuits to divvy amongst us.
"Bon appetit," I giggled as I took a bite of the Lumiose Galette he gave me. Traditionally, one could get them from the cafe, but you were limited to one per day. And considering how Gladion had about 10, I was curious as to how long he had been hoarding them for.
We made our way to an outdoor cliff of the cavern, which was caught up in a frigid snowstorm. I clung tightly to Arcanine as the valiant Pokémon grossed on, seemingly unbothered by the snow. When wild Pokémon would crawl out to attack, he took most of them out with ease; he was a fire type, for the matter.
"We-we've made it," I stuttered as a large brown building came into view. It stood menacingly in the storm, a nearby Pokémon center looking wimpy in comparison. I called Arcanine back into his ball as Gladion and I dashed into the center together. I felt him place an open hand on my back as I handed the rosy cheeked nurse my Pokémon.
"We really did it," I turned to him with glimmering eyes. All he gave me was a satisfied smirk in response as I put the Pokeballs back into my melon slice bag.
"No," he contradicted all of a sudden, catching me off guard. "You did it."
"What?!" I exclaimed in shock. "Not without your help! Stop that!"
"It was all your doing though," he protested. Suddenly, I saw him look down dismissively, as if he was cueing me to drop the argument.
"Well... I guess it's time for me to challenge the league," I smiled.
"I would wish you good luck, but you don't need it," Gladion said encouragingly. He walked me back outside, into the storm once more. "I know you will be able to do it."
"You're too kind," I blushed. "But how will you get back down the mountain? You don't have a ride Pokémon!"
"I'll get back down there, don't worry," he assured me. "Right now, it's all about your ability. The last thing you should be doing is worrying about me."
"If you insist," I murmured in response. Just as I was about to turn to the league, I felt Gladion grab my arm.
"Before you... go," He whispered with a sudden anxiety in his voice. I noticed that his breath was shaky, as I could almost hear his heart beating at the speed of light.
"Yeah?" I asked brazenly, the boy unphased by my words. Instead, I noticed him inch closer to me, his other hand suddenly stroking underneath my chin. Just what was he trying to do?!
"This... is something that I've wanted to do for a long, long time," the blonde breathed hoarsely. I watched as he closed his emerald eyes, his lips suddenly crashing into mine. I felt my heart pound in my chest as I closed my eyes, trying to kiss back. As it was my first kiss, I struggled with figuring out was to do. I kept doubting myself, worried that I was a bad kisser. It was clear this wasn't his first kiss, as his tongue moved around with a grace I had never even known existed.
After what felt like a mere second, the boy pulled away, a thin blush and a sly smile on his face. "So... what do you think?"
"I think," I murmured as I put my hand behind the blonde's head. Just before I pull him in for round two, I finish my statement by saying "that was way too short".
After another period of time, I noticed the blonde pull away from me for a final time. His eyes were widened in shock, unable to comprehend what just happened between us.
"Was I good?" I asked innocently, still insecure about my kissing abilities.
"Were you good?" He echoed in a mocking tone. "Jesus, (y/n), you were incredible. I've never met anyone who could kiss as well as you can. That... was so amazing."
"I agree," I smiled sweetly. "I'll think of that as being my good luck charm."
"You're going to be amazing," he insisted as he placed his opened palm on the top of my head. "I can't wait to celebrate with you when you've finished. If you know what I mean."
"Ah! Me neither!" I exclaimed, my flustered emotions apparent. I felt his lips crash into t forehead tenderly one last time before I blinked and noticed him turned away from me. I turned towards the league, a sudden determination welling up inside me. I stepped up the staircase to the entrance and took out the pokeball belonging to my Decidueye, clutching it tightly.
"It's time."
