CHAPTER 8 NEVE

Neve cursed under her breath as she darted along the dock. Kai was much faster than her, and she was slowed down because of her now wet clothes. The idiot had pushed her into the water.

Neve had never been fond of water, she had no idea why. Most of her early years, when a fear could've started, she didn't remember. But what mattered now was the fact that this jerk had decided to push her in, and he was going to pay for it.

She stumbled, ducking under the mast of a boat that reached over the dock. Kai was laughing, but he wouldn't be for much longer.

Just as she was about to catch him, the dock started to shake violently, throwing Neve and Kai to their knees. Neve, quick on her feet, grabbed her head to protect it from anything that could hit her. A loud bang and a rumble, like an explosion, rattled the dock and slammed into her ears. For a moment, she couldn't hear anything, and all she could see was smoke. Tilting her head ever so slightly, her eyes were welcomed with a burning sensation from the thick smoke. The smell of fire was strong.

The smoke cleared a small bit, allowing them to see the dock better.

"Oh my god." Neve whispered, but then her voice raised to a scream. "The boat!"

Scrambling to her feet, Neve took off in the direction she came.

"Neve, what are you doing?" Kai yelled after her. Now the tables had turned, he was chasing her.

Neve ran through the smoke, coughing, trying to keep her eyes as closed as possible. Hoping against hope, she prayed that it hadn't been their boat. Wren and Chelsea were on that boat. Kai was yelling after her, but his voice was muffled and strained.

When they reached the end of the dock, were the boat had been anchored, all they saw was fire, smoke, and boards floating in the water, the remains of the boat.

"Oh my god." Kai said, coming up behind her. She could barely hear him.

Neve desperately scanned the waters surface, looking for an arm, a head, anything. Any sign of the two demigods. It took a minute maybe to find anything. The clock was ticking away.

When Neve saw Wren's back floating out near the tarnished bits of the dock, she didn't hesitate to dive in, even though Kai was already preparing to jump. Icy water bit at her face and arms, but she tried to focus on anything but the water.

The water was dark and deep. She felt trapped, like the water would suddenly close in around her and lock her there until something came to continue the food chain. Neve pushed her hands through the water, trying to banish those thoughts from her head. Her head was above the water now. So she could see Wren's body floating, her back facing upwards. She was a mere two feet away from her now.

Oh my god. Neve thought as she reached Wren, flipping her upright. Her eyes were shut, her skin pale.

Neve took a moment, she was having trouble breathing. Maybe because of the smoke or the shock, or the blood...

Neve wrapped her arm around Wren's waist, trying not to think about the gruesome sight. Blood trailed uselessly behind them in the water as they swam back to the dock. Wren's shirt was ripped, stained with her own blood.

Kai helped pull Wren up onto the dock. Neve had dealt with things like this before, but never anything this serious.

"Kai, give me your sweater." She said firmly, he obeyed. It was hard to think straight with her head pounding like a drum, and her hands stained with her own friends blood. Quickly, she started ripping the sweater apart. The thing was old and ratty, so it was a little bit easier to break it down. She wrapped it around Wren's chest, covering the place where her arm had been.

"Kai, go get Marco!" She yelled at the boy. He stood there for a moment, staring at her in disbelief. "Now!" She screamed, trying hard to keep her tears in. The boy took off.

Neve tied the sweater tight. Pressure stopped the blood flow.

"Oh my god..." She said, holding her head in her hands as she crouched on the dock. She was not trained in this. If only they had an Apollo kid here...

Neve fiddled with the sweater, but that was all she could do until Marco and the others got back. It took all the will in the world not to cry. Wren was going paler and paler, Neve knew that if her skin got a yellowish tint, it was all over.

Desperately, she scanned the water one more time in search of Chelsea.

Someone screamed. Strong hands pulled her away from Wren, she fought against them, but she was drained and couldn't fight properly. "Let go!" She yelled, but her vision was going blurry, and the last thing she saw was Wren being scooped up in someone's arms and carried away.
