Wren watched helplessly as the ship exploded. She knew that this should be impossible, that she was dreaming because that was the seventh time she saw the ship explode.
She wondered what was happening. If she was actually dying, if she was just replaying her last few minutes alive until she actually did die or if she was dreaming and Chelsea never caused the ship to explode.
She hoped that if she was dying her friends and her dads would know she chose her fate. She knew Marco well enough that he would blame himself, Wren hoped that he wouldn't go to hard on himself.
The world went black for the seventh time and Wren heard voices.
"Will, her arm," one of the voices said.
Dad? Wren thought, recognizing Nico di Angelo's voice.
"I know, Nico," the other voice replied. It sounded like the person, Wren's other dad, Will, was crying. "I can't do anything about it."
Was that a sob that Wren heard?
Gods, Wren wanted more than anything to tell them she was okay, to sit up, to talk to them. But for some reason she couldn't seem to be able to open her eyes, let alone speak or move.
"Nico," Will whispered, he said something else that Wren didn't hear.
Wren heard footsteps walking away from her.
Dad, she wanted to say. Don't go. Please, stay.
Wren felt a gentle weight being pressed against her chest.
"She's breathing," she heard her dad, Will, say to himself. "Thank the gods."
Dad, I'm fine. I'm fine.
* * *
Wren heard a knock on the door. She heard it creak open.
"Nico, Will, can I come in?" A pause. "Please?"
Marco...
"All right, Marco," Nico replied.
"How is she?" Marco asked.
I've been better, Wren wanted to say.
"She's not great, but she's getting better," Will replied.
"What about her arm?" Marco asked.
My arm? Wren hadn't realized there was anything wrong with her arm.
"I," Will's voice cracked, "I can't do anything about it."
What happened to my arm? Wren asked herself.
