Wren got up from her seat on the carpet, walking over to sit on the couch next to Marco, who was laying. When she did sit beside him, he said a simple hello and nothing more. besides putting his head on her lap.
"You okay?" she asked. Marco was usually more talkative.
He nodded. "Yep."
"You said you'd tell me why you're covered in paint." Wren started picking paint out of his hair.
"Right. I was painting the Big House when a wild Neve appeared and started firing her gun."
"Sure," Wren muttered sarcastically. "She just started firing her gun for no apparent reason."
"Okay. Fine. I fell off the ladder and then she started shooting randomly. I guess I scared her."
"Shit, dude, are you okay?" Wren asked as Kai playfully kicked Marco off the couch and slid off of where he was sitting to sit next to Wren.
By then, Joel had strolled over, taking Kai's spot on the back of the couch. He stepped on Marco, who was helplessly trying to get up off the ground.
Marco made a pitiful squealing noise, which made Wren laugh. Joel propped his legs up on Marco's back, pinning him to the floor.
Wren suddenly got up remembering something.
"Hey, where you going, Wren?" Marco asked.
"I've got to go talk to Chiron." Wren playfully kicked Marco as she started to walk out of the Lounge.
"Brave," Kai muttered under his breath.
Wren rolled her eyes, remembering how Chiron had often been like a grandfather to her. She walked out into the hallway, walking past painting after painting until she found the map room.
She knocked on the outside of the door frame. "Hey, Chiron?"
''Yes?" Chiron's voice called from inside the room. He opened the door.
Behind him, a wide, circular table, covered in one giant map was placed in the center of the room. A wide skylight let light shine through the roof. Shelves, littered with various artifacts, covered the rooms walls.
"Can I talk to you?"
"Of course." Chiron gestured for her to come in.
"Um," Wren paused for a second, trying to figure out what to say. "Is there anyway I can call my dads? I mean Nico and Will, not Mr. D."
"Of course." Chiron dug in his coat pocket, pulling out a cellphone. "You know the number?"
"Yes." Wren replied, awkwardly stepping back out into the hallway for privacy. She dialed in their home number, holding Chiron's phone up to her ear as it rang.
"Hello, you've reached the household of Nico, Will and Wren di Angelo. We aren't home right now, but will call back as soon as possible. Please leave your message after the beep," Will's voice said through the phone. The phone beeped.
Wren took a sharp breath before beginning. "Um, hey, Dads. It's me, Wren. Okay. I'm going on a quest. Wow. Straight to the point aren't I? Anyway, we're leaving tomorrow. Marco's coming and so are seven other campers. I love you guys. Bye." She hung up, but at least she had heard Will's voice... Even if it was just a recording.
She rushed back into the map room and gave the phone to Chiron. "Thanks, Chiron... But they didn't answer. Maybe I'll try again later." She forced a weak smile, feeling feverishly homesick, close to tears.
"That's too bad." Chiron said, putting the phone back in his coat pocket. "I'll tell you if they call back."
Wren briskly walked out of the room and instead of heading directly back to the lounge she walked to the bathroom. She went inside and slammed the door, collapsing behind it and felt tears rolling down her cheeks.
Wren stayed there for a couple minutes in that position, before getting up and grabbing a few paper towels and looking in the mirror. Her eyes were puffy and red, her face a bright pink. Wiping her eyes with the back of her sleeve, she told herself to walk out like nothing had ever happened. Wren took the paper towel and ran the tap over it for a few seconds, using the now wet paper to wipe her face off. She waited a couple more seconds, dried her face and walked out of the bathroom, trying to look confident. It's okay. She told herself. It's okay.
Wren walked back to the lounge and sat down next to the boys again. It was almost like nothing had happened, and for them it hadn't. Marco glanced up at her, he wasn't on the floor anymore.
"Hey," she flopped down next to him.
"Hey." Marco grinned. "Are you okay?"
That got West to glance at her. "She looks fine."
Marco shrugged.
"I'm fine," Wren muttered, trying to look cheerful.
She looked at Marco and started examining his hair. Flecks of dried blue paint littered his head, resembling dandruff. Careful not to pull his hair, she started to flick the paint off of his head. She leaned down so she was next to his ear. "Can I talk to you in a bit?" she whispered, careful for the others not to hear.
Marco nodded ever so slightly. Wren went back to cleaning out his hair. "West, can you help me with this?"
* * *
Wren stepped over West and Kai, who were both sleeping, and gave Marco a slight shove. "Wake up."
He opened his eyes. "Wren?" he said, groggily. "What time is it?"
"I have no idea, but you said you'd talk to me. Get up."
"Where are we going?"
Wren rolled her eyes. "Less questions. Let's go."
Marco, with a groan, pushed himself off the couch, stumbling as he did so, and followed her out into the hallway. It was dark, so they couldn't see each other, that would probably make things less awkward.
"Okay, why did you want to talk to me?" Marco asked when they got out into the hallway.
"Did you call your dad?" Wren murmured.
"What? Yeah, course I did. Why, didn't you call your dads?"
"Yeah, I called them. But they didn't answer." She leaned up against the wall and slid down it, so she was sitting down.
"Is that why you went to talk to Chiron?"
"Well, yeah, to borrow a phone, I'd rather go to him than my father." Wren felt Marco sit down next to her and wrap his arm around her.
"I knew you looked sad when you came in."
"I did not," Wren snapped.
"Well, let's just say I know you too well, then." He shrugged awkwardly.
"It's cold out here," Wren mumbled, looking around the dark hall.
"Do you want to go back in?"
Wren shook her head then realized Marco couldn't see her. "Nah. I'm good."
"C'mere." Marco pulled her closer. Being a legacy he didn't get many of his parents powers, if any, but because his dad could control fire he was usually warm.
"Thanks," Wren whispered, close to falling asleep.
