Chapter 17

Garrett saw it on my face. Blood was the look in my eyes he caught my wrist and quickly but softly shut the door. He had his arms wrapped around me so tightly, I couldn’t not obey. My knees started to feel weak and wobbly. When we got to the elevators he picked me up and got in. He went down the floor and then paused to elevator. He didn’t say a word to me. He just set me down on the floor, sitting next to me, rocking me slowly. I started to cry.

Where are all of these stupid tears coming from?” I asked myself bewildered.

“Shh,” was all he said, “Shh.”

I let him rock me for a little while then I pushed the elevator door button to go.

“Why did you do that?” he whispered, as he stood up pulling me up.

“They will come looking for a problem if we keep it paused for too long.” I whispered away the last of the tears.

He held me extremely close to him till we got to the cafeteria. When the elevator doors, opened I wrapped one arm around his waist and he keep one of his on my shoulders. We walked slowly to a passed everyone; they all stared at us as if we had a family or friend die. Then I realized it must be the little make up running un red streams down my face.

We got to the back fast enough, though at human speed. I sat down and Garrett had his phone out typing away.

“What are you doing?” I asked when my voice sounded like I had just woken up.

“Texting your brother and my mom, your brother to get him down here and my mom to update her.” He answered in a low voice so that no one can.

“Okay,” I took a deep breathe, “I need you to do something for me…” I trailed off.

“You know by now, I would do anything for you.” He said in a heartbeat.

“I know,” I said putting my hand on his cheek, “But I don’t know if you will do this,”

“Whatever it is I will do it or help you do it.” Garrett held my hand to his cheek.

I smiled at him.

“Okay, let’s test that.” I told him, “I am going to be leaving to go to *college* at the end of the summer. But I won’t be coming back…” I used the bunny ears for the Word College, letting him figure it out on his own.

He gave me a sad, white as a sheet look.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“I want to do that,” I put both of my hands on his face and waited till he looked at me, “I want to do that with you.”

He leaned into my hands and then he quietly said, “Okay, whenever you are ready, I’ll go with you.”

“Thank you,” I whispered back.

“Does your brother know?” he suddenly asked.

When he said that I froze and I suddenly went pale.

“Yes he knows but I don’t think he knows when.” I said barely talking. “But he said that when I leave he wants to go with me, now us.”

“Great, we can go together.” He said trying to make the mood lighter.

We sat there in silence. When Jake walk to our table and sat down.

“Hey guys. I think that we should go home and check on Jason.” Jake sat down next to me rubbing his eyes.

“Yeah we should.” I said still looking at Garrett.

Garrett got up, pulling me up and we all walked out to the car, got in and left.

When we got home I went straight to my room and started to pack up.

“Where are you going?” Jake asked behind me.

I jumped.

“To my closet to pack, why is it you ask?” I said irritated but ready to cry again. He caught my wrist.

“Katlynn, where are you going to go?” he said intensely looking into my eyes.

I felt the tears running down my face but said nothing.

He shook me a little.

“Katie, please tell me.” Jake said with more anxiety in his voice.

“Nowhere. I am just packing in case you, Garrett and I leave because of Dad…” I looked him square in the eye, “you know that as soon as dad is gone, mom won’t be far behind. You know that better than I do.”

Jake stood there shocked releasing my arms.

I quickly went into my closet and packed anything within my reach. Though I knew that this was just the beginning of the pain and packing.

“I do know,” Jake said leaning on my closet door.

“I also know that we can’t just leave Jason and Ria though,” he sighed under stress, “it’s just not right.”

“I know but there’s not a lot that we can do. I also know that Jason can take care over the family money and house for a while now. And my Guess Ria would be part of that plan too.” I said with tears running down my face.

“Yeah, well, lucky for him Mom and dad have been saving up that money they started working.” Jake said they started working. “Jake said with a small smile on his face.

“That’s true, they will be taken care of in that way.” I nodded.

“And he’s in college wanting to be a lawyer. He as a date almost every Friday, so he will sooner or later have a family. Like a wife and kids. He won’t be alone either. He will have all the essentials.”

“What do you mean ‘essentials’”

“I mean family friends, money, food, a home.” He said naming off each of the things out oldest brother has and would have.

“Yeah I hope so.” I was able to smile a little and whip the remaining tears away from my face.

I zipped up the two suitcases I already had full of clothes, shoes, and other accessories. I got off the floor got my mug and took two big gulps and walked down the stairs to the main room with my brother close behind. Garrett was there eating an apple he probably found in the kitchen.

“Hey,” he said with a mouth full.

I smiled and walked to his side.

“You shouldn’t eat that much, so fast at least,” I said taking a napkin and getting the apple juices off of his lips.

He smiled and leaned in and kissed me.

“Did you get a chance to talk or at least see Jason yet?” Garrett asked us.

“No, I was going to do that now.” I answered him

Jake and I walked up the stairs hand in hand, while I had my other arm around Garrett.
