The Grand Canyon

We all headed to the near by town to search for Murphy. As our search continued Warren, Addie and I found a small clothing store. The weather was changing into summer so I was able to find a short sleeve black V-neck, a pair of olive green shorts, and a pair of army style beige boots. While in the changing room I took all the pins out of my hair and rubbed all the make up off my face. "Angel! Let's go we gotta find Murphy!" Warren called out. I met up with the group outside and we continued our search. "It's starting to get dark and we need to get to higher ground!" Said Addie. "Okay we'll continue our search in the morning." Said Warren. As we made our way to the outskirts of town we found a really tall building. "We can set up camp in there." Said Warren. 10k and I scoured ahead to clear out any Z that may have wandered inside. Once we were clear we started looking for places to sleep. Just then Addie called out, "hey guys I found a CB radio. We can contact Citizen Z and get an update on the 2nd wave." She said. Addie and I fiddled with the radio tell we could hear a faint sound. "Citizen Z this is delta xray delta do you copy?" Addie said into the mic. We waited a few minutes then she spoke again, "Citizen Z this is delta xray delta do you copy?" We waited a few more minutes. We kept fiddling with the knobs for about an hour. "It's no use Addie. We should get some sleep." I said. As we were about to turn the radio off we heard a noise. Addie fiddled with the knobs until it became clear. "Delta xray delta this is Citizen Z i copy!" It called out. "Citizen Z this is delta xray delta we need an update on the 2nd wave." Addie replied. "Biased on where your signal is coming from the 2nd wave is about a day and a half away." He said. "How far are we from the Grand Canyon?" I asked. "Your about 7 hours away." He replied. "How's the package?" He asked. "Uh, about that." Addie said looking over at Warren. Warren nodded and Addie told Citizen Z what happened. "Well we had gotten into a bit of a sticky situation and when we escaped Murphy kinda... Took off." "What?!" Citizen Z yelled with worry. "We searched for him all day, but no such luck." Addie said. "Well get some rest and first thing in the morning find him!" He replied. "Copy that." She said. Once everyone was asleep I snuck back to the radio. I turned the volume down low and spoke into the mic. "Citizen Z do you copy?" There was no answer so I looked around and spoke again, "Come on Zachary! Answer me!" I sighed and pulled my knees to my chest. "This is Citizen Z who is this and how do you know my name?" He asked. "Oh come on Zachary! You really can't recognize my voice?" I asked with tears in my eyes. "Angel..." His voice echoed in my ears. I sighed with relief, "Oh Zach, I'm so scared were not going to find Murphy. Tell me what to do." "Oh Angel, you don't know how happy I am to hear your voice. I thought I lost you!" He said with a shaky voice. "Zach, what do I do?" I asked. "Well you've made it this far, so I know you'll figure out a way to find Murphy and get back to California." He said. "Zach, your all I have left. I don't know if I can do this." I said. "Angel listen to me! You've concord the worst of it. All on your own. I know you can do this." He said reassuringly. "Okay." I said. "I love you Zachary!" I said. "I love you too little sis." He said. That next morning we continued to search for Murphy. "Guys this is pointless if we get stuck in this 2nd wave. We need to start heading towards the Grand Canyon!" Said Doc. "I agree if Murphy's smart he'll be headed the same way to survive." I said. So we head on towards the Grand Canyon. "Hey guys look there's another town!" Yelled Addie. We started scavenging around the town looking for supplies. "I'm telling you, I'm not who you think I am and if we don't get out of here were all going to die!" I heard a voice ring out. "That sounds like Murphy!" I said to my self. I looked around and noticed Warren and 10k near by. "Warren! 10k!" I whisper yelled and motioned them over to me. "I think I hear Murphy over their arguing with someone." I said. We all listened again "why should I believe you? How do I know your not going to lead me to my death?" Another voice rang out. "Come on! I don't wanna die and I know you don't either. Just let me go!" Called out a familiar voice. "Yup that's defiantly Murphy." Said Warren. We snuck around the side "10k go left, Angel go right. Wait for my signal." Ordered Warren. We both nodded and got into position. "Alright drop your weapon and step away from Murphy!" Warren ordered the tall man Murphy was arguing with. The man quickly whipped around this his weapon drawn "I don't think so, I'm not going to let some girl seal my bounty." He said. Warren gave a little sideways nod and 10k and I stepped out of the shadows with our weapons drawn. "Put down your weapon and we won't hurt you." Warren said. "Huh! Figures." He said with a scoff. He dropped his weapon and said "fine take The Murphy and his pet. I hope you enjoy your stolen bounty." "What bounty?" 10k asked. "Didn't you hear? That Citizen Z guy offered a bounty to who ever could deliver The Murphy to California." "No he wouldn't do that!" I said. "Believe it honey! Because he did." Snapped Murphy. "Look we don't want this new bounty. It was our mission to deliver Murphy from New York to California." Explained Warren. "Yea, yea, yea. Spare me your sob story lady." He snapped. "Can I go now?" He asked "10k go untie Murphy and Cassandra." Said Warren. 10k untied them and we lowered our weapons. The guy grabbed his gun and started to walk off. "If this bounty means that much to you, you can come with us and collect it for yourself." Warren called out. "What! Oh no I don't think so! We already allowed the girl, we don't need this meat head too." Murphy argued. The man stopped and turned around, "does he always talk this much?" The man said with a chuckle. Warren smiled and said, "I wish I could say no." The guy laughed and said, "I'm special agent Vasquez." "I'm first class Lt. Warren. This is Angel and that's 10k and you've already met Murphy and Cassandra" Warren said introducing all of us. "Nice to meet you all." He said. We continued walking until we met up with Doc and Addie. As we got close they headed towards us and Vasquez pulled out his weapon. "Woah! Woah! Whoa! There with us!" 10k said stepping in front of him. He looked at Warren and she nodded so he put his weapon away. "Hey man, who's this guy?" Doc asked. "Apparently Citizen Z put a bounty out for Murphy and special agent Vasquez is the one that found him and Cassandra." Warren explained. "What happened to her?" Addie asked. "What? She needed a make over. I think she looks good." Murphy said defensively. "Sick." Addie said shaking her head. Cassandra was now dressed in tight gold strippers outfit with matching stilettos and a white fur jacket. Murphy just rolled his eyes and said, "are we going to get the hell out of here or not?" Warren nodded and we set out once again until we ended up in a heavily wooded area. "We should stop and set up camp. "How are we on time?" Warren asked Addie. "We should be okay for the night, but we'll need to find a vehicle tomorrow." She said. Warren nodded then said, "alright here's the plan... Vasquez and I will search for some fire wood, Addie and 10k will search for some food, Doc and Angle you two keep and eye on Murphy and Cassandra. Everyone got it?" We all agreed and they set out. About 20 minutes passed and Murphy said he had to pee. "There's a tree over there." I said pointing behind me. While Murphy was going pee Cassandra was guarding him like a dog. "Since when did those two get so close?" Asked Doc. Just them we herd a noise in the brush. "10k... Warren... Addie!" I yelled out, but there was no reply. "Im going to go check it out." I said. "Be carful man." Doc said "keep and eye on Murphy!" I whispered. Doc nodded and I walked into the brush. "Hello?" I called out. Again there was no answer. I started to head back when I herd a branch crack behind me. I quickly whipped around with my arrow drawn, but it was only Cassandra. "Oh god! You scared the shit outta me dude!" I said putting away my arrow. "Come one there's nothing out here." I said as I started to walk away. "Errrhh" I heard from behind me. "did you just hiss at me?" I said slowly turning around. As soon as I faced her she tackled me to the ground "agh! Cassandra get the hell off me!" I yelled. She grabbed me by the hair and began to smack my head into the ground. I was able to get over on her and pin her down. "What's your problem!" I hollered. "Errrhh" She said again then kicked me over and started choking me. "Ahhhhh!" I screamed and she pressed harder "Ugh! Ah! Eh!" Was all I was able to get out. As the world started to black out around me I herd a muffled pop and Cassandra fell. I gasped for air and 10k ran to me. "Angel are you okay?!" He asked in a panic. "What happened?" Addie asked running up. "Is everyone okay!" Warren yelled running up to us. "She... She... Cough... Tried to.... Cough... Kill me." I said trying to catch my breath. I looked over and saw her laying there with a bullet through the head and I started to hyperventilate. "Come on, let's get her back to camp before it gets dark." Warren said 10k helped me up and then helped me back to camp. "Hey you guys, what happened? I heard a gun shot and got worried." Doc said. "Where's Cassandra?" Murphy asked. "Your little pet tried to kill me!" I snapped. "So you shot her then?" He asked looking at 10k. No one said a word. "Hmm, to bad I was finally starting to like her." He said then laid back down by the fire.
~the next morning~
We woke up super early and headed out on foot. We reached another small town where we were able to find some food, water, and some ammo. As we ventured to the end of the small town we split up. A few minutes later we all reconnected. "Did anyone find anything?" Warren asked. "We found a couple ATVs but they don't have any gas." Addie said. "Vasquez and I found an RV with a trailer, but I gotta temper with the wires to get it started." Said doc. "Alright, Doc and 10k you two get the RV started, once they get the RV started we'll load up the ATV's as a back up plan." Warren explained. We all agreed, Doc and 10k were able to get the RV started while Vasquez, Addie, Warren and I pushed the two ATVs over and onto the trailers. Doc drove for miles while Addie and I tried to fix the radio to get in contact with Citizen Z. "How's that radio coming Addie?" Warren asked. "I think I've just about got it." She replied. "How she doin' doc?" Warren asked. "I dunno how much longer this old bucket of bolts is gonna keep running." Doc said. Addie chuckled and said, "Talking about yourself or the RV?" "Both." Doc said with a laugh. "Alright I think I just about got it. Go ahead Angel." She said. I placed the antenna outside on top of the RV. "Northern Light do you copy? This is delta xray delta do you copy?" Addie said into the mic. "How reliable is this kid anyway?" Vasquez asked. "He's kept us alive this far." Replied Warren. "How do we know he's even still alive?" Vasquez asked. "Aren't you a ray of sunshine this morning?" Murphy said mockingly. "That's what happens when you haven't had a decent cup of coffee in half a decade." Vasquez snapped. "Well excuse me, princess." Murphy replied before turning back over in the top bunk. "Citizen Z do you copy? ... I know you're out there! It's me, Angel, do you read me?" I said into the mic. Addie, Angel, I hear you. I copy you. It's me, Citizen Z." We heard a voice ring out. "Man, it's great to hear your voice." Addie replied.
"It's so good to hear your voice. How's the package, have you found him yet?"he asked. "He still hates being called that! The name is "The Murphy" thanks to you, blabbermouth!" Murphy yelled out. "Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean to sic the whole world on you." He replied back. "Yeah, right."'Murphy said rolling his eyes. "Back to the point, we need you to give us an update on the 2nd wave." Asked addie. "It looks like it's hot in your tail. You've got about two hours before you end up smack in the middle of it." He replied. "Thanks Citizen Z, we'll contact you when we find shelter." Addie replied. "Copy that." He said. We continued on for a few miles before the RV crapped out on us. "Well Doc, what's the verdict?" Warren asked. "If it was a human we would have piked it already." Doc replied. "Alright then let's siphon out what gas we can and get these ATVs up and running." Warren ordered. Vasquez siphoned out the gas and had just enough to full them both up. "Alright each ATV will only hold 2 people." He announced. "This one has my name written all over it." Murphy said climbing on one of them. "I'm not letting you outta my sight." Vasquez said climbing in the other. "Doc and I can get to higher ground on our own." 10k said. I was standing next to Warren and whispered, "I won't leave him. Not again." She nodded and I spoke out, "I'm going too." As I walked over to them. "No! I couldn't bear it if something happened to you." He said. "10k I'm not letting you leave this spot without me. Deal with it." I said kissing his cheek before walking into the brush. 10k looked at Warren wanting her to say something, but she just shrugged and said, "alright then let's get a move on! Stay safe guys!" Addie and Warren hopped onto the backs of the ATVs and they continued up the high way. "Angel, slow down! I'm old ya know!" Doc called out. "I think I found us a place to camp out." I called back. When the boys caught up to me all they could say was "woah!" "Nice find kid." Doc said making his way to the side of the mountain. We climb to the top and took in the view. It was miles of canyon at different levels as far as the eye could see. "Wow it's so beautiful!" I said. 10k intertwined his fingers with mine. "Hey guys I think I found a-" but before doc could finish what he was saying we herd a loud crack and doc fell to the ground. "Doc!" 10k hollered as he ran to see if he was okay. "Is he okay?" I called out. "I don't know he hit his head." 10k called back. "Ahhhhh!" I shrieked as a high volt of electricity coursed through my body and I hit the ground. The last thing I heard before everything went black was 10k yelling, but I couldn't make out what he was saying. When I finally came to my hands and feet were tied and a large man was carrying me wile the 10k and Doc were being led by rope. The brought us to the side of the canyon they took the rope that was tied around my hands and tied the other end to a tall branch in one of the trees. They forced 10k and Doc to the ground. "What are you gonna do to us?" Doc asked. "You'll be treated exactly how you deserve to be." One of the men snapped. "What are you doing on our tribal land?" He demanded. "Trying to escape the hoard of Zombies headed this way!" Doc said. The man back handed Doc and I tried to look away but they wouldn't let me. "Are you insane! If you don't listen to us your all going to die!" 10k hollered. The man socked 10k square in the jaw. "No!" I screamed. "I'm only gonna ask you one more time. What are you doing on tribal land? You're trespassing on sacred ground." He said as 10k spit out blood. "We just told you!" 10k spat. The man hit 10k again. "Stop! Please!" I screamed. "Can't you shut her up!" The man demanded. Then one of the men tazed me in the stomach, I howled I pain. "I thought I said to shut her up not make her louder." He hissed. So the man tazed me in the neck and I black out agin. "Leave her alone!" 10k screamed in anger. The man went to hit 10k again, but before he could a girl hollered, "That's enough! What the hell is wrong with you Gordon, you've got to give this zendigo bullshit a rest." She started to untie 10k and Doc while another lady made the other two guys untie me and carry me to the infirmary. "Where are you taking them?" Gordon demanded. "To the infirmary." She snapped back. They girls had the man lay me down in a mat while they attended to the boys. While one of girls was cleaning up 10k's lip he asked her, "is she going to be okay?" She gave him a sincere smiled and said, "she's going to be fine, she'll just be a little lethargic when she wakes up." He sighed and just watched me as I laid there. "You care a lot about her huh?" She asked. "Yea, I guess you could say she's my whole world." He said with a smile. "That's sweet." She said. "You wouldn't happen to have anything for the pain, would you?" Doc asked the other lady. "Pain management happens to be my specialty." She said with a smile and they both walked away. "You've got to forgive my brother, he's just trying to protect us." The other girl said. 10k looked over at me and replied, "I know how it feels to want to protect someone."
~Doc's P.O.V~
"Remember before the apocalypse, when all this was illegal." I said with a chuckle. "I guess every cloud has a silver lining. So you're a real medicine woman, huh?" I continued. "Same way you're a real doctor." She replied. "This stuff is strong, ain't it?" I asked. "Yes." She said with a huge smile. "We use it to guide us spiritually. Well, actually just me." She continued and we both started laughing. "Hey, you wanna see something over here?" She asked. I nodded and fallowed her over to the large wall of the canyon where their pictures are drawn. "Are they talking to you too?" I asked her. "They always do." She said with a smile. "I don't know how, but I swear I understand every word they're saying." I said in amazement. "Can't believe my ancestors were such boneheads." I continued. "In the end, everything is forgiven." She replied.
~Warren's P.O.V~
We continued on the ATVs until we reached a large building. "Hold it right there! This is tribal land! No visitors allowed!" Said an older man with long gray braids. "Our vehicle broke down a ways back. We were hoping for a little shelter from the horde of zombies that's coming." I pleaded. "We can't help you. I'm sorry." He replied. "Listen, sir. I know we're outsiders, and you have no reason to trust or believe us, but you can believe your own eyes." I said handing him my scope. "It's already over the horizon you have a few hours or less." I continued. He looked through the scope and gasped. He looked at his men then back at us and finally said, "Come with me." and led us inside. "Welcome to Northern Quest Casino Resort, my name is Chief Danny Fire Cloud." The man finally said as we entered a large room. "Sir, we actually came here to warn you. This is a solid wall of zombies headed this way." I tried to explain. "We've dealt with hordes before." He replied. "I wouldn't be so sure. We've been in contact with Citizen Z and according to him, this horde is miles deep and it's gonna destroy everything in its path." I explained. "This building is strong, these walls are steel reinforced concrete we'll be safer here." He explained.
~Angel's P.O.V~
10k stayed by my side the whole time, while Doc explored the camp with the medicine woman. "Hey, kid how's she doin?" Doc asked as he walked back over to 10k and I. She started moving a little bit but she's still out. As they were sitting there talking Gordon walked up he had two of his men grab 10k and Doc and one of them carry me. "What the hell's going on?!" One of the girls shouted. "You patched them up not it's time for them to go... Their presence here puts us all in danger!" He scolded. He walked us to the outskirts of their camp and handed me over to 10k. "So were free to go then?" 10k asked. Gordon nodded and the boys didn't hesitate to start walking. They didn't get more than 10 steps away when Doc stepped right into a net. "Doc!" 10k said in a panic. He went to walk over to him and got caught in another trap pulling him upside down into a tree forcing him to drop me on the ground. "Shit! Angel you need to wake up! Please!" He begged. "Thanks for volunteering to be our early warning alarm." Gordon said with a laugh and walked off. A few minutes passed and they started to hear a rustling sound. "Shit! I think that's a Z and Angel is still passed out." 10k said in a panic. Doc began to slow his breathing and closed his eyes the next thing you knew the ax that was logged into the zombies back was through his head. "What! What just happened?" 10k asked in disbelief. "I'm not sure but I think I killed it." Doc replied. "How?!" 10k asked confused. Doc shrugged and said, "I don't know, astral projection?" Just then another Z came into sight. "Well do you think you can do it again?!" 10k said struggling to get out of the ropes. "Uhh, let me try!" Doc replied. He closed his eyes and tried to concentrate, but t was no use. "No such luck kid." He said with a sigh. 10k struggled to try and get him self up to untie himself. "Hey, you! Ugly! You're slip's showing!" Doc yelled out trying to get the Z attention. "Doc, what the hell are you doing?" 10k asked. "Buying you time if you would shut up!" He replied back. "Come on girlfriend, over here!" He continued to call out to the Z. He finally got its attention and realized he was about to be Zombie food. "I need some z weed." He said clinching his eyes shut. Just as the Z started to get close Gordon's sister rode up on her horse and shot and arrow right through the zombies head. "What are you! Our guardian angel?" Doc asked astonished. She just laughed and said, "come on, we need to get to my fathers casino to warn them... They won't believe me, but they might believe you." She said. Doc hopped up on the second horse. "Since when did you learn to ride a horse?" 10k asked with a chuckle. "I haven't. This is my first time, now load her on up here so we can get going." he said. They hoisted me up onto the horse with Doc and set off to the casino. When we finally got to the Casino we saw the rest of the group standing outside loading up trucks. "10k! Doc! Angel! You guys mad it!" Addie cheered. 10k got off the horse and Doc lowered me down to him and he carried me over to the others. Fear over took their bodies and the ran to us. "What the hell happened?!" Warren asked. "My son." The chief said with a sigh. "Is she going to be okay?!" Addie said putting her hand on my heart. "She'll be okay. Her bodies just been through a lot she needs rest." Said Gordon's sister. "What are you doing here, I thought you were with your brother?" The chief asked. "We came to warn you." She replied. "I'm well aware, we've withstood many of these storms before." He said standing tall. "Brother, you got a 10.0 zombie-quake headed your way." Doc said butting in. "Dad, you should listen to them! We need to get out of here." She begged. "Everyone! please listen to my daughter and let her guide you to safety!" He announced. "Wait... Your not coming?" She asked. "No, This is my life here, your mother and I built this place with our bare hands... her spirit rests here and I will too." He explained. "But dad!" She argued. "Enough! I have made my decision, this is your time, and remember we love you." He said sincerely. She nodded her head then turned to us and said, "alright, We're going to the sacred cliffs. We'll take the vehicles as far as we can take them, then go on foot the rest of the way. Everyone stay together." She announced. Everyone nodded in agreement and we started back to the camp. As we reached a hill they all turned and watched the casino crumble, the medicin woman wiped a tear from her eye then turned and continued to the clifts. "It's gone Gordon! Demolished by zombies!" The girl said walking up behind him. "The casino? Father?" He asked with concern. "He wouldn't leave." She said in a sad tone. "Stubborn till the end." He replied in a low voice. "We need these people Gordon! Or we are all going to die!" She demanded. "You are welcome here, all of you." He said looking out at all of us. "I give my deepest apologies." He said walking up to Doc and 10k. "In the end, all is forgiven man." Doc replied shaking his hand and 10k did the same. "In a few hours, the entire wave is gonna push through this cliff side." Warren said. "What are we gonna do?" Gordon asked. "We got to divert them somehow, we need a plan." Said doc. "Maybe we can divert them over the side of the cliff with fire." Gordon proposed. Everyone loaded up into the trucks and began creating a wall of fire with gas and matches to divert the wave of zombies. As the zombies got closer and closer to us and the wall of fire Murphy looked out at them with concern. "They can feel! I have to save them!" Murphy cried out and took off towards the wall of fire. "No, Murphy!" Warren hollered. "There's way too many! What the hell are you doing?!" Vasquez scolded. "Look, they're turning!" Gordon announced. "Let's get to higher ground!" Said Warren. As they got to the top, "It worked and then some." Gordon said watching the wave of zombies fall into the canyon. "We can't thank you enough for what you did. You saved our people." Gordon said thanking the team. "It's what we do." Warren said with a smile. "Here's something, to remember your trip and this is for the road." The medicine woman said handing Doc a necklace and a small leather pouch. Warren and the rest of the crew started loading up the small mini bus from the hotel. They had 10k lay me in the very back while Murphy sat in the middle. "Well we should get going. We got a long way to go." Warren said. They said their goodbyes and before we all loaded into the bus Doc said, "Oh and if anybody asks, we were nowhere near the Grand Canyon." They all piled into the bus. Doc drove while, 10k and Addie sat in the back with me, Vasquez took up two seats near the front so he could sleep and Warren took a seat next to Murphy. "You didn't have to kill them." Murphy whispered. Warren looked at him and whispered back, "Yes, we did... everyone we've ever mercied needed killing, because it's us or them... thats what it's come down to." Murphy didn't say a word he just let a single tear slip from his eye. Warren noticed and said, "The day is coming when you're gonna have to decide what you are, human or zombie and when that day comes, I want you to remember which of the two is trying to keep you alive." With that she wipes the tear off his face and settled into her seat because we were in for a long ride back to California.
