I stood, looking out over the side of the ship with the odd pirate captain.
His words had chilled me, but I wouldn't let it show.
The flaming cruise ship was slowly sinking into the water, hull first. A cluster of life boats surrounded it, each packed with people.
I prayed my family was among them.
"It's okay, love. We're your family now.", Captain Kirkland said.
His words didn't reassure me.
He wiped a tear off my cheek with his thumb.
I hadn't even realized I was crying.
I stood against the railing for a long time, watching the ship fade away into the darkening sky and we were left on open waters.
The only light I could see was from the lamps hung on the ship and the stars above.
Everything else was a dark, inky blackness.
The silence was broken only by the lapping of waves against the boat. None of the crew spoke, which struck me as odd. Not one made a sound as they went about their various duties.
At first, it was unnerving but after awhile the monotonous silence grew relaxing to point that I would be enjoying myself if I wasn't being held captive on a ship that looked as if it were from the 16th century by a hot guy who was most likely a murder rapist.
So you can imagine how loud I screamed when Captain Kirkland touched my arm lightly and said, "Time for bed, love."
Inside I was extremely shaken but on the out side I crossed my arms and grumbled,
"I have a name. Not love. Mari."
The pirate chuckled softly and picked me up, bridal style, and carried me into the inner part of the ship. I glared at my captive and said "I can walk myself, ya know!"
"Oh, I doubt that. You could easily get lost. There are strange things round these parts, Mari.", Captain Kirkland said with emphasis on my name. I shuddered slightly.
The Pirate opened a door, using his foot since his arms were full of me. The inside revealed a spacious room with a back window that overlooked the ocean. Maps and richly colored furniture dotted the room, but what I really noticed was the large shelf of books. My eyes widened slightly. Captain Kirkland smiled warmly and plopped me down on a bed.
The only bed in the room.
Uh...
"I'll sleep on the floor for the time being.", the blond stated simply.
Well, not what I expected.
"A-are you sure?", I asked hesitantly.
I was his prisoner.
His captive.
What was the catch here that I, the so called inferior of the situation would get the bed when the superior got the floor?
Was he trying to win me over or something?
Captain Kirkland chuckled.
"Well, I am a British gentleman. Unless you would rather me sleep with you..", he said with a slight suggestive wiggle to his bushy eyebrows.
I sweat dropped.
"No! No. That's ok."
The pirate laughed and sat in a chair as I slipped my shoes off and crawled under the covers. He dimmed the lights.
"Goodnight, Captain.", I whispered under my breath.
"Please. Call me Arthur."
The pirate whispered back. His voice had a tinge of bittersweet sadness to it.
I wondered why..
"Well, goodnight... Arthur."
"Goodnight, Mari."
