The next day, Amanda woke up early and got herself dressed for school. As she walked down the stairs, she heard her parents' voices from the dining room. She felt like she has not seen them for so long. Walking into the dining room, she saw her mum and dad sitting opposite each other, both eating and talking with each other. Amanda walked towards her mum and sat beside her.
"Amanda! Good morning dear. Have some breakfast? Claire! Make-"
"No, it's fine mum. I'm not hungry. I'll just buy some food at school," Amanda interrupts before her mum could order Claire to cook up something for her. She does not feel like eating since yesterday. Ever since her conversation with Nate. Her heart aches just thinking about what happened yesterday. She brushed the thought of him off her mind.
Amanda took a glance at her watch. Brandon should have woken up by now. He's probably in the bathroom; she thought. She stared into space for a while until her dad voiced out.
"How's school with you and Brandon?" Ethan Sommer asked his daughter who seemed to be quiet today. He felt weird considering Amanda had always been the cheerful one in the morning.
"Hm? Oh, everything's good. We're getting along...well..." Amanda said. Amanda scratched her cheek lightly even though it wasn't itchy.
"Sweetie you seem...different. You look kind of tired too. Are you coming down with something?" Samantha Sommer asked her daughter in a concerned way, as she noticed her daughter's slightly puffy eyes.
"What? Oh no I'm fine mum. Don't worry. I'm a big girl. I'll know when I'm sick." Amanda smiled a little so her mum would not worry about her. The last thing she wanted was her parents to regret adopting Brandon. You just can't send back an orphan. Especially since he has not done anything harmful to our parents.
Amanda took out her phone and pretended to scroll through it. She wanted to avoid any questions from her parents. She was just glad they were there with her.
Not long after that, Brandon showed up. He pulled the chair beside their dad and sat down. As usual, the seat was facing Amanda. He looked at his sister briefly. She seemed focus on her phone. Brandon smiled at his parents. "Good morning mum and dad. I missed you both."
"Aw honey, we missed you too. Sorry, for being so busy. I promise you by the end of the year we'll go for a family holiday okay?" Mrs Sommer said apologetically.
Brandon smiled happily. Finally, he will get to spend time with his parents at the end of the year. He'll be looking forward for it.
Amanda glanced at her brother and noticed his smile. She was somehow surprised to see that kind of expression on her brother's face. He's never smiled that way in front of anyone, well, of course he would never smile in front me duh, he hates me. But... It's kind of refreshing to see him smile like that once in a while.
Brandon turned to Amanda and he too, was surprised to see his sister staring at him. His smile faded. What's with this retard? Do not look at me that way; he thought. What, has she never seen a dude?
Amanda, seeing Brandon glaring at her, looked away immediately. Gosh, he doesn't have to glare. Amanda stood up and brushed her skirt down. "Mum, I'm going to go get ready for school. Have a safe drive to work today." Amanda gave her mum a peck on the cheek and proceeded to do the same towards her dad.
"Study hard Amanda." Mr Sommer advised his daughter. He turned to Brandon. "You too, son."
Brandon nodded. "Your allowance enough?" He asked both Amanda and Brandon.
"Yeah, it's enough dad." Amanda answered. Brandon nodded as well.
After Amanda left the dining room, Brandon got up as well. "Bye mum, dad. I love you. Thank you for having me in the family." He said gratefully.
