Recap:
Their eyes rested on me. Sarah and Kevin looked at one another, and whispered for a little bit. Their attention turned back to me.
“We want to adopt you,” Sarah said.
My eyes widened.
Me?
Chapter Eight
I was still staring at them shock.
“Erm, which girl would you like to adopt?” Miss Shay asked, causing me to snap out of my shock.
“Cat, of course,” Kevin said with his deep voice.
“Why?” I blurted before I could stop myself. Ah, as long as I’ve said it, I might as well keep going. “I’m supposedly the daughter to a pair of murders.”
“Well, we don’t believe in those silly-billy rumors,” Sarah replied.
“Also, we think you deserve a break,” Kevin added.
“From what?” I asked.
“From . . . well, everything,” Sarah stated.
I looked around at my friends. “Well, I don’t need a break,” I said firmly. “And I certainly don’t need to be adopted.”
Kevin and Sarah gasped.
“B-but of course you do!” Sarah stuttered.
I shook my head. “I’ve got all I need here.” I went over and gathered my girls in a group hug.
“Ladies!” Miss Shay interrupted our friend moment, making us all pull away.
Miss Shay turned back to Kevin and Sarah. “I’m sorry, but I think the girls are tired. Maybe you could come back some other time?”
Sarah just stood there, with her mouth open. Kevin put his hands on her shoulders. The looks on their faces made me believe that they totally thought that I wanted to be adopted. They probably also thought that my life sucked eggs or something. Well, sometimes it did, but I had my good moments.
“We’ll be back exactly a week from today. Let’s say, about one o’clock in the afternoon?” Kevin suggested.
“Next Saturday?” Miss Shay said. Kevin nodded. “Of course. Thank you for coming. See you next week!” She walked them to the door. We heard them exchanging goodbyes, and Miss Shay was back in the kitchen.
“Now, Cat, I will deal with you,” she said. “May, Taylor, and Carmen, go to your room please.”
The girls didn’t protest to Miss Shay’s brisk and clipped tone. They trudged up the stairs, leaving me alone. I watched as May's cheerful blonde pony tail swung back and forth when she walked. That seemed like the only cheerful thing right now.
“Caterina, you were very rude to that sweet couple! If you ever want to get adopted with, well . . . you’re history, you need to be nicer to people! Those people wanted to adopt you, and you made it clear that you have little interest in being adopted!” Miss Shay fumed.
