Part 26

"We can explain," I said, holding my hands up in surrender, not aware that the medicine bottle was still in my hand.

Severon raised an eyebrow, clearing letting us know that he wouldn't believe a word we said. But I would not let us be wrongly accused. That stupid snake died on its own, and we had absolutely nothing to do with it.

"Really? Please do explain then," Severon urged, folding his arms over his chest.

"Uh—well—you see—" I had no idea what to tell him. So I decided to go with the truth. "It died on its own."

The look Severon gave me told me that he thought I was spewing nonsense. How he was unable to tell the difference the truth and a lie while being in the Mafia was beyond me. Or maybe he just hated me. But then again, he did kiss me...

Focus you idiot!

"It died on its own?" Severon cocked his head to the side, scrutinizing me and Renzo.

I nodded frantically. "Yup. Renzo and I came here for a walk and then it died."

"Renzo and you came here for a walk and then it died?"

What in the strawberry hell? Did he not understand me the first time? Or did he just want to tell me how stupid my explanations were?

"Yes. Keep up," I muttered.

Storming forward, Severon snatched the bottle of medicine from my hand, causing me to yelp at the sudden action. He then fixed his glare on me, completely ignoring my partner in crime; which I was not sure whether it was good or not. I did not want Renzo to get in trouble, but I did not want to face Severon's wrath all alone either.

"What is this then?" Severon questioned, his voice a deadly whisper.

I rolled my eyes. He was surely blind. "A bottle of medicine, duh. And you call yourself a doctor. Psst, I am never coming to you for a check up, mister. You can't even tell that I was holding a bottle of medicine." I wished I had a zipper for my mouth.

Severon narrowed his eyes, before grabbing my bicep in a tight hold and tugging me forward. "Where did you get this from? And why did you take it?"

"Renzo got it for me." My eyes widened as I spilled the beans. Fuck my chocolate chips. "I mean—"

He turned his glare at Renzo, who looked at Severon in the eyes. "You stole this?"

Renzo nodded, and I wondered if he head a death wish. "Yes. Kelsey told me to get it for her."

What in the red licorice was going on here? How could Renzo do this, betray me like this? I thought he was my friend. Maybe that was how friends were, turned their backs on you at the last monent. Or maybe not.

You spilled the secret first, now suck it up like a bitter lollipop.

"Why?" Severon enquired, not bothering to look at me.

"She wanted to experiment," Renzo answered.

I was baffled by his answer, more baffled than I previously was when he spilled the kidney beans to Severon. I did not want to experiment, I hated science.

"Experiment what?" Severon queried.

"Whether plants would die if she spilled the medicine on them," Renzo responded, his tone serious.

That was absolutely ridiculous. I did not like plants. I liked colorful flowers, not those green things. Why would I want to spill medicine on a bunch of plants? I had better things to do than that, like knocking out snakes.
