Epilogue

*Craig Pov*

I watched from backstage as Nicki danced her heart out, dreading the time when the music would turn off and her dance ended. Serena and I would be going on next, and I had to admit that I was nervous.

But there were several reasons for my nervousness.

1. I could sing terribly and get booed off the stage.

2. I could fall off the stage and break my neck.

3. There was still the possibility that Serena might not show up.

Yup, Serena didn't show up after homecoming. When I asked Leah when she would be returning, she said that she didn't know. But I knew that Serena wouldn't leave me hanging. She had promised that we would sing in the talent show together, and I was just praying to God that she kept that promise.

The song that Nicki was dancing to came to an end , and she took a bow before scurring off the stage.

"And last but not least, Craig Crippen!" The announcer said, making the various people in the crowd cheer and scream

After not hearing from my girlfriend for so long, I wanted to drop out of the talent show, but my friends convinced me to stay in. I looked at the other end of the stage hoping to see Serena standing there, but she was no where in sight.

I took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage, searching through the crowd of teachers, family, and my peers. There was a big sign being held up by Chres  that said "Craig's #1" Jake was still recovering from the shooting,  so he couldn't hold it too, but he was cheering. Nicki and Leah were standing next to each other screaming at the top of their lungs, and for a split second I could see Serena. She was standing next to the girls screaming her head off, cheering me on.

But I knew that she wasn't really there.

I rubbed my eyes, and sure enough, the space that had been reserved for Serena was empty. Leah gave me a sympathetic smile when my eyes went back to her.

The instumental to the song I was supposed to be singing had already started playing, and people were probably wondering what the hell was going on .

In a split second decision,  I ran to the DJ who was on the side of the stage and asked him for a song change. After a few moments he agreed, and turned off the music that was currently playing. Confused murmurs could be heard throughout the auditorium as the new song I requested replaced the old one.

The instrental to Solo by Iyaz began playing throughout the auditorium. I took a deep breath, brought the microphone up to my mouth and began singing.

I said I don't want to walk this earth

If I got to do it solo

See how we used to be a team

Running the streets

Ya we was living out our dream, oh

You used to be my rider

I was your provider

And now we separated in two

Oh we was burning up the block

And everybody know when we step in the spot, oh

See, we was like the dynamic duo

I'd never thought that you'd go, but you did

Yeah you did

Oh baby you left and sailed away alone yeah, alone

And now you got me trapped up on this island

With nowhere to get home

And I don't wanna go, no

I don't wanna go, go

I don't wanna go, no

I don't wanna go, no

I don't want to walk this earth

If I gotta do it solo

Cause I was so high

And I was so low

And I don't wanna walk around alone, solo

And I don't want to walk this earth

If I gotta do it solo

Solo

When I was done singing, the silence in the room was interrupted by the loud cheering of the audience. I hurried off the stage as tears began welling in my eyes. All I wanted to do was find out where Serena was.

Nicki was immediately at my side, telling me how sorry she was, but I shrugged her off like it hadn't bothered me.

"And now, for the awards." The Pricipal said through a microphone. "We would like to thank each and every one of our acts for the wonderful performances, but there can only be one winner. Before that, we must announce the second and third place winners."

She opened the envelope in her hands and looked over it a few times before bringing the microphone back up to her face.

"In third place, William Jennings!" Will excitedly made his way on to the stage  and received his tiny trophy and 20 dollar gift card.

"And in second place... Craig Crippen!" I dragged my feet over to the principal and took my moderately sized trophy and and 50 dollar gift card.

"And our winner, Nicole Meyzen!" Nicole seemed pretty shocked that she had won as she recieved a Gigantic trophy, and 100 dollar gift card. I knew that she deseverved to win, but I couldn't help but think if Serena was here, I wouldve won.

When every one had exited the auditorium,  we made our way out into the hallway where people congratulated those who had performed in the show. Nicki and I walked side by side as we searched for our friends.

When we finally spotted them she ran into Jake's arms,  or shall I say arm,  since his left one was still injured. He wrapped his uninjured arm around her waist and placed a kiss on her forehead. "You did great babe."

I watched the too in envy, wishing that I could hug and kiss my girlfriend too. "Good job guys" Chres said.

"Yeah, you two were the best." Leah added. " But Craig I have to talk to you."

Leah and I went out of earshot of tge others and I looked at het expectantly. "So, where's Serena"

Leah looked at me sympathetically. "I'm sorry Craig, but she's not coming back. "

The hope that had been bubbling up inside me died. I nodded and we walked back to the group. But three questions were bouncing around in my head and I doubted that Leah knew the answer to them.

Why did Serena go away?

Where did she go?

Would I ever see her again?

Only time will tell.
