with a deadpan gaze, jenna's mother stared at her lap, her hands beginning to shake more frequently, sweat beads beginning to form on her hairline. she ran her nimble fingers through her red hair, a shaky sigh escaping her pink lips. "h-how could this be?" her lips were quivering with fear, her words coming out gentle, yet weak.
"i'm very sorry, ms parkison." the doctor apologized for the tenth time, their eyes small and full of mourn for ms parkinson, whose head began to fall out of disappointment. "we can put her into counseling and therapy, put her on medication, and have her under constant supervision." the doctor began to name off possible routes to go to help jenna with her disorder, but every option seemed like torture to jenna. she felt as if she couldn't live a normal life if she's treated like a puppet, being constantly controlled by her mother and her doctor.
"i can't do that to her. she's an adult, it's not my place to do this." jenna's mother muttered, slightly lifting her head up, her eyes moving towards the doctor, who pressed their lips into a thin line momentarily before speaking.
"ms parkinson," the doctor bent down towards jenna's mother, placing a hand on her kneecap as they explained the outcome of not choosing any of the possible cafe options. "if we don't help jenna now, she'll die."
the doctor acted as if jenna wasn't in the room, and the doctor's words worried jenna immensely. she didn't want to die, she just wanted to be...
good enough.
"if we don't do these healthcare options, she will end up dying of either malnourishment, her immune system will shut down, her kidneys may fail, or she may die of plain dehydration. either way, we don't want to lose another patient to bulimia." the doctors voice grew quiet, a slight underlying sadness hidden within their serious and professional tone of voice. jenna looked down at her shoes, slightly kicking her feet as she listened to the doctor talk to her distressed, yet disappointed, mother.
"i don't want her to have an entourage of people following her around. and she's already on xanax, i don't want her on another medicine." although jenna's mother was worried for her daughters life, she didn't want her to die of an overdose, and jenna's mother was more of a type to take a more natural route, even if it was a slower process.
"she's taking xanax?"
"yes." jenna's breath hitched in her throat, quite loudly, and she perked her head up to find both her doctor, and her mother, staring at her.
"we didn't find a trace of any depression medication in her blood, ms parkinson." the doctor revealed, earning an distressed cry from jenna's mother, who broke down. she couldn't handle seeing her daughter in this state of illness, especially with an eating disorder as serious as bulimia, and she began to wonder where she went wrong.
jenna watched from afar, a few tears of her own creation trickling down her cheeks as she watched her mother sob into the doctors' shirt. jenna let out a shaky, exasperated sigh, looking down at her lap, forcing herself to drown out the sounds of her mothers loud sobs.
but, the sound of her stranger things theme song ringtone filled the small room, slightly helping drowning out her mothers increasingly loud sobs, and her mother didn't seem to acknowledge the ringtone, neither did the doctor. jenna slyly grabbed the phone from underneath her thigh, checking the caller id, her face almost instantaneously lighting up.
taehyung.
although she hadn't known taehyung for more than a week, she had grown quite attached to the brown haired boy. his mere presence made her comfortable, as if nothing would ever harm her. his whole aura and personality gave jenna butterflies, and she hadn't recognized the sensation of them fluttering in her stomach. she wondered if she was having stomach problems when she first felt them whilst around taehyung. although she wouldn't admit it, as she wanted to keep her rebellious persona up, she had a soft spot for taehyung.
as her ringtone grew quieter, she quickly pressed answer, quietly pushing herself off of the bed and creeping out of the half cracked open door. she looked around for a quiet place to talk to taehyung, and she found a bathroom door slightly cracked open and slid into the bathroom, which was luckily next door. she pressed the phone to her ear, the reoccurring butterflies beginning to flutter in her stomach the second she heard taehyung's deep, comforting, and charming voice.
"jenna." he sighed, sounding relieved. a small smile played at jenna's lips as she heard him breath heavily into the phone. she felt as if she he was breathing on the back of her neck, so as a reflex, she shivered, goosebumps arising on her arms as she mustered a quick response.
"hi, taehyung."
"i've tried to text you, but none of them delivered. are you alright?"
jenna swallowed the large lump in her throat, beginning to break out into a cold sweat at the simple, yet dreaded question; 'are you okay?'.
as much as she wanted to say no, she didn't want to stress poor taehyung out to a further extent, so she lied. she was extremely thankful he couldn't see her face at that instant, as it was flushed a bright red. she looked at herself in the mirror, slightly chuckling to herself. she thought she resembled a tomato.
"yes, i'm okay."
"do you know why my texts haven't sent?" jenna pursed her lips in thought, shaking her head, but quickly realizing that taehyung couldn't see her.
"no," jenna began to grow curious as to why she wasn't getting his text messages, and placed taehyung on speaker, pressing the home button and checking her messages.
in fact, she wasn't getting anyone's messages.
whether it was an issue with the cell towers, or her phone, she prayed it was temporary.
"you there?" taehyung's voice echoed throughout the empty, yet oddly large, bathroom. jenna took him off of speaker, pressing the phone back to her ear and speaking.
"yes. sorry. i was checking my messages. i haven't gotten yours, miyoung's, or anyone's." as jenna said it aloud, she grew more confused, and more curious. but, her curiosity was cut short by her stomach rumbling. she grew nauseous, knowing she needed food, but also knowing how it'd affect her.. image.
"what was that?"
"uh, the sink! the pipes are weird." jenna lied, and she was almost 100 percent sure taehyung saw through her lie. but being, well, taehyung, he luckily didn't.
"oh, okay. i just wanted to check up on you. i'll talk to you later, okay?"
"okay. goodbye." and with that, taehyung hung up. jenna sighed, tucking her phone into her back pocket, running her bony fingers through her hair. she placed her hands on either side of the sink, leaning her weight against her arms, a slight smile beginning to creep onto her lips.
although her life was turning into shackles, falling apart in front of her eyes, and the darkness was beginning to envelop her like a cloak; taehyung was the sliver of light shining through the seams.
