Newt was as dense as he was cute when it came to the emotions of others or reading the feelings of the people around him. Far too often, he was focused on the emotions of the creatures he worked with that he neglected his own species. But then again, he didn't get along with his kind very often. There were the few and select souls that he could tolerate being around and even fewer that he actually enjoyed spending time with. Among them was Tegwen and it had all started from a young age. Despite not knowing much about each other, Newt did want to spend time with her back in school. He wanted to get to know her, from her likes to dislikes...her hobbies and anything else.
He just didn't have the nerve to go through with it. He couldn't ask her a question and since reuniting as adults, he had the hardest time being romantic with her because he wasn't sure what was acceptable and what wasn't.
Yet aboard the train, in a matter of seconds, he had confessed his love for the woman without even realizing it. He knew he was in love with her, that wasn't a question to be answered. The months he had been away from her while finishing up the manuscript to be published, his mind continuously had gone back to Tegwen. The way he had left her home without even giving her a hug, just a simple goodbye before he left. He kicked himself over and over about that.
Leaving Tegwen without knowing how she truly felt about him or telling her how he truly felt about her. It left him nervous for the time that he was away because so many things could happen in such a short time frame. He was afraid that when he saw her again, that it would be too late. The idea of her finding someone else had run rampant through his mind nearly every day.
But what was a man to do?
He had never expected her forgiveness so easily, not that he was complaining. But to pursue a relationship with her seemed far out of his reach. Let alone having her love him the way he loved her. That was asking for too much in his head. He was just thankful for a friendship with the woman, to begin with.
However, over time as he noted every single interaction Tegwen had with the creatures or tending to her plants, it was enough to make the man weak in the knees. Not only that, but he had the blessings of the creatures from Dougal to Patrick, even Fussy Little Pickett was the first to like her.
By telling Pickett that he loved the little bowtruckle, he had also announced how far his feelings had advanced for Tegwen, leaving the woman completely speechless. The shattered mug grabbed everyone's attention, bringing all eyes to fall on her. Her expression was blank in the beginning, with the exception of her eyes widening and her lips slightly parted in shock. She didn't say anything and certainly didn't make any attempt to move.
"Twiggy?" Newt called to her. He thought about waving his hand in her face to gain her attention, but he didn't want to startle her either. She had already broken one thing. He removed his wand from the inside of his jacket and quickly cleaned up the mess while no one else was around to observe them.
"Twiggy..."
"What did you say?" She muttered softly to him.
"I said Twiggy-"
"No before that..." she said before looking over at him finally. "What did you say to Pickett?"
Newt opened his mouth to reply, ready to recite what he had told the bowtruckle, when his words repeated in his mind. At first, it didn't seem like he had said anything to warrant a reaction out of her, but quickly he realized what he had admitted to.
"Oh dear..." He breathed, suddenly looking quite faint as he turned his head away from her. It certainly didn't go as planned. He was hoping to bottle it up inside until he probably spontaneously combusted and exploded into tiny little pieces that fluttered about everywhere. But that didn't work out obviously.
