I sat in silence, consumed by my thoughts as we awaited the signal. The camp was divided - some were ecstatic, while others were wracked with worry. As the leader, I felt numb, dying inside. I was the first to arrive at this place, and my experience and nature had earned me the respect of the others. They believed in me, and I became their leader. But it was a hollow title, a reminder of our thirteen years of enslavement. We were on the cusp of freedom, but I had made a mistake - I had fallen in love. And I wasn't eager to leave, to leave him behind. Love or freedom - the choice seemed impossible. Yet, I knew I couldn't jeopardize our escape for the sake of my heart. So I made the obvious choice.
We succeeded, and we returned to our cities.
I longed to see my father again, to return to my own city, but I knew what awaited me there.
