"Selene! You're back! Did you win?" My little sister Hanna yells, as she comes running towards me. I open my arms for her, and wrap her in a tight hug. I look up and see my mum and dad, in the doorway. My mum hasn't changed a bit, her brown graying hair is rolled up in a tight bun. Her eyes still shine like the blue sky. Dads hair is entirely gray now, and his green eyes are like the trees. My mum and dad are very different, while my dad is laid back, and hardworking. My mum is stubborn, and controlling. But they're made for each other, met at 20 and married at 23, they had my brother when my mum was 25.
"Selene, guess what! Mum and dad said I could get a horse for my birthday!" Hana says excitedly.
"That's great. Have you been practicing?" I ask her.
"Yeah, I've been practicing on the work horse," my Hana replies.
"Let's go inside and eat some lunch. How does that sound?" I ask her.
"Let's go! It's been lonely without you here. I've missed you," Hana says in a faraway voice. I look down at her, almost 6 years old, and she's still looks like a little princess. Curly brown hair up in pigtails. Her oval face, and blue eyes, make her look so innocent. She still is.
"I've missed you too," I reply. I have, she's the sunshine in darkness. Me and her go to the door, where mum and dad are waiting.
"So how'd it go?" My mum asks me. There's a hint of hope and, disappointment in her voice. I avert my eyes from her gaze, so she can't read me. That's one thing about my mum she can tell what you've done in your expression. I brush past her and go to the kitchen.
"What do you want for lunch?" I ask my sister.
"A peanut butter and jelly sandwich, please."
"Coming right up." I reply.
I get out the bread, jelly and peanut butter. I start making her and me a sandwich. My mum clears her throught behind me. I turn around.
"Mum, dad do you guys want me to make a sandwich?" I ask.
"No thank you," my mum replies.
"I'll take one," my dad says and goes to the table and sits down. I finish up the sandwiches and gives them to dad, and Hana. I start eating.
"Like I asked earlier, how'd it go?" My mum asks me again.
"I was a perfect lady, just like you told me to be mum. But apparently the prince was looking for someone different," I reply.
"You should've known, not to be too perfect Selene! I tried to help you, but you've failed this family again." My mum says angerly, slamming her fist down at the counter. I flinch a little, I didn't know she would be this angry.
"Mum, what was I exposed to do? I did everything you told me to do. I shaped myself to be perfect, to save this family. But I'm sorry to say it did'nt work!" I yell back. I can feel the tension in the room. My dad and sister has stopped eating, to watch us.
"Get out! Now! I'm done with your mouth! That's probably why the prince didn't choose you. Don't come back until you've broke the curse, until then your not apart of this family!" My mum yells at me. I jump back, and gasp. My heart just broke into another million pieces.
"Amethyst! Is this what you really want? Think rationally, don't start saying, the first thing that pops in your head! This is not right, she's done everything you've asked her to, let lose a little." My dad says sternly. I've never seen him get angry at my mum before.
"My descion stands, out now!" My mum says stubbornly. Tears start falling.
"No! She just got back! I don't want Selene to leave!" My sister yells. She starts crying, and a little piece of me dies. I look at my mums angry face, my dads defeated look, and my sisters face that is filled with tears, I'll always remember them. Even my mum. I go upstairs and pack my bags, grabbing my brothers watch, and some money, I'm all done. I look around my room. The wooden bed with my colorful quilt laid on it. The huge rug on the floor. My dresser and bookcase. Finally the pictures on the wall, this might be the last time I look at this room again. I walk down the stairs, out the door and I go get Juno. One last look at the cottage, and my family, I ride away. Not looking back.
