The battle was certainly a bloody one.
I zig-zagged the way through the mild-ranks to the major ones.
I followed right behind Tanner, slicing my way through anyone who tried to lay a hand on her. Calibre was rushing to catch up beside me.
Someone's hand grabbed me by my throat and picked me up, and I kicked at him, but he stabbed me near the ankle, the knife only cutting a little chunk of skin. But that chunk was enough to bleed through, enough to hurt badly.
I screamed out in pain, tears forming near the corner of my eyes.
Lui grabbed me by my hand and jolted forward, tearing me out of the man's grasp with a knife still in my leg.
I fell to the ground, wincing, and Tanner turned around and kneeled down next to me.
Calibre screeched as he took out his dual swords, jabbing into the assassin's neck in moments.
He kicked back the body and my eyes widened as a bloody head fell to the ground.
He took his swords back in hand and reached back to pick me up.
"Come on, you can do it." Tanner whispered in my ear.
"Tanner, she got stabbed. She shouldn't-" Calibre insisted.
I growled. "I can do it. Come on."
I stood, feeling a stinging feeling rush through my foot, but I started running behind Tanner once more.
Eventually, we reached the major ranks.
I could look behind me to see the faces of my new allies and brothers fighting behind me, and I turned to Tanner.
"Aim for Allen. He'll stop some of this." I mumbled.
She nodded once as if she had the same idea, and she continued on her way.
That was when an enemy rushed forward and grabbed Tanner's arm.
I went to rush forward, but two more major ranks grabbed my arms as well.
I screeched, kicking and slumping to the ground, a punch landing onto my thigh.
Another one then on my chest, in my ribs, and then a sting in my back.
I started growling, trying to kick my way through, but they wouldn't let me go.
As another stinging sensation slipped down my wrist, Daithi darted into view and kicked one of the men backwards, taking a katana and stabbing it through his back and into the hard dirt.
The man squealed and I flipped backwards, grabbing the other one in a headlock. I pushed his head to the ground and jumped onto his back, grabbing another spear from Daithi's belt and securing him to the ground as well.
"Daithi, they have Tanner." I said.
He shook his head.
"She got lost in the mob. I think she got out fine though, she's over there somewhere." He said, handing me a grenade.
"Okay. Daithi, I'll watch for Tanner. Scan the area and tell everyone to get out of explosive territory on the Northeast side." I said, putting the grenade in my satchel.
He nodded once and darted through the bodies, both alive and dead.
That was whenever I saw Tanner.
She was fighting a female major rank.
I recognized her from my previous encounters.
Lizzie Darmin.
And that was cue for Tanner to shoot an arrow directly into her throat, causing the girl to fall to the ground.
I knew Tanner was miserable seeing people die like this, but she'd be even more miserable if she let her family down like that. And so she gathered herself and-
It was all suddenly in slow motion.
A stray bullet dodged its way to Tanner, striking her directly in the chest.
I screeched bloody murder.
It landed in her lung area.
I walked up to the man and stabbed him directly in the forehead, tearing through his skull, then taking my knife back. Blood seeped through him and he fell, lifeless to the ground.
Just like how Tanner was now, not moving.
I ran over to her, tears already pouring through my eyes.
No, no, no. This couldn't of happened. There's absolutely no way.I screamed and fell to the ground next to her, tearing off her armor and shirt, just enough to expose her wound. I tore off a piece of her shirt and bound it up, pressing it to her bloody chest.
"Tanner. Please." I couldn't breathe as sobs escaped my throat, a scream bubbling up in my chest.
Her hand flew to mine, and she scrunched her eyes, uncomfortably breathing.
"Tanner, listen, you'll be okay, please. Please." I sat there, whispering to her, begging her to be okay, begging for her to live.
"Z," She said.
"Tanner, I couldn't do this without you, please." I cried, applying more pressure.
"Z," She said again.
"Please stay." I begged, a tear escaping my eye and landing on her torn clothing.
"Z, babygirl," She whispered.
"Yes, anything, Tanner." I said, holding her head in my lap.
"It's my time, darlin'." She whispered, tears filling her eyes.
I never really saw Tanner cry.
It hit me hard, seeing her like that, knowing that this would be the last time I'd see her.
"I love you more than you think." She whispered, grabbing my hand.
"I love you too, Tanner," I sobbed, gripping her hand tighter.
"You'll always be my daughter." She whispered, smiling through tears.
"And you'll a-always be m-my mother, Tanner..." I said, my chest almost exploding.
She smiled and put my hand to her heart, soaking my hand in her blood. I didn't move it.
"I'll see you in another life, my dear..." She said, closing her eyes.
I nodded.
"Goodbye, Madre." I cried. "You were the best assassin known to man."
"Impossible. That's you." She whispered, her grip loosening a bit on my hand.
She was dying.
Her heart was slow now, her breathing even slower.
"I'll make sure you'll always be remembered, Tanner. Thank you, I love you so much." I sobbed, trying to grasp her hand even tighter.
Before I knew it, everything was in slow motion again.
"You can, baby. Do one thing for me." She said, firmly.
"End the gangs."
I nodded and then her hand fell limp. It slid out of mine and Tanner stopped breathing.
I screamed into the air and grabbed her body, dragging it to the Southwest side.
She's still alive, she has to be.
But she was gone.
I didn't stop hugging her, I didn't let go of her now still body.
I just held onto her clammy hand and rocked her, crying.
I rocked her like she used to rock me.
Flashbacks rushed into my mind at that second, me as a little girl, Tanner being my beautiful mom.
And when they were over, I howled into the air again, and I noticed the battlefield was now almost empty.
"Z, where are the last few?" Evan demanded through my neglected microphone.
And seeing my chance, I lied.
"Northeastern side." I whispered.
"Heading there now." He said.
And that's when I got the gas bomb out of my pocket.
"3," I whispered aloud, turning off my mic.
I fidgeted with the gas bomb.
"2," I took it, aiming at all of the allies, my family, and the enemies.
"1." I hurled it at them, Evan snapping back and cursing, looking directly at me.
I waved one last time as everyone inhaled ans started hitting the ground.
When it was all over, I walked to our side.
I looked up all of their names in a database, finding out where their original home was.
I took out the device Droidd made, the one that clears memories.
One by one, I cleared each person's memory, taking them and dropping them off at their original homes.
I separated them from each other so that they wouldn't have the slightest chance of remembrance.
When everyone was back home, I made a small cemetery, walking through our now empty house to get materials to carve tombstones for the dead.
I put all of our allies and enemies along the outskirts of our territory, but I saved a huge spot in the middle for Tanner.
I decorated her tombstone with white lilies.
When I dug the hole to lay her in, I grabbed a gorgeous silver dagger from her room and buried her with it. I grabbed old photographs of her and I and lied them beside her in the dirt.
She was gone, but never forgotten.
And when I was done with that?
I packed my bag, taking some of Tanner's clothes.
I printed out maps and newspapers.
I found locations of my sister.
And that's where I headed next, on my next battle.
To find my family.
I'd never forget the first one I had, though.
I turned back to Tanner's grave.
Never leave family behind.
