Z POV:

"The War, it's almost here." Evan now stood in front of all on us in the line he had gathered us in.

"Before we go into intense training, I want all of you to look around." He said.

We looked around, meeting the eyes of our terrified family members, the ones that most of us had grown to love and cherish.

Looking around, I also saw eyes of the innocent, the inexperienced.

I finally knew that this battle was going to suck as soon as I looked into the eyes of my mother.

She's one of the few I'm fighting this battle for.

No matter what it takes, I wanted her to live. I didn't care if we all died or if I stayed alive.

One way or another, she'd be able to finally move on.

She'd have a life, be happy.

Evan looked at us, Delirious holding his hand. I don't think I've seen them let go once since they've heard about the War starting.

"These people, these beautiful members of our gang, the ones we know as family, they will be hurt." He said to us, causing Delirious' hand to grip his even tighter.

"And some of them may die. I don't know yet. But what I do know is that when we are in that War, we live or die. We fight with all we have, because if we don't, that could cause us all to die. And when we make it out of that battlefield, if we do it alive," He sighed.

"We're gonna keep going on, but we will always have these memories. Tyler, you don't like Z, correct?" He asked.

Tyler nodded.

"As much as you hate her, would you want to live with the fact of giving our position and killing her? Would you want to be blamed for her death?" He asked.

Tyler shook his head no.

"No, I couldn't."

"These last few days are all we have left. Make them worth it. Tell everyone you love them every chance you have. Because that may be the last time you tell them." Evan told us.

We nodded.

"Off to training."

"Two more miles." I told him.
Nanners looked back at me.
The weather had started to get colder, Fall turning into Winter.
His hair had settled to a lighter blonde color now.
Now my mother was running laps out here as well, her hair also turning lighter. Cold did that to us.
"You have to be crazy." He told me, wheezing.
I shook my head at him.
"You've only ran three."
He looked at me.
"There's no way you're expecting me to do this. Z, I can barely walk anymore at all."
"Do you want to live?" I asked.
He nodded.
"Then get your ass on that track and don't start running until you pass Madre." I told him, pushing him.
He stumbled back and nodded quickly, taking off once more in a cloud of dust.
I don't know what it was.
Maybe it was the fact that the woman I'd ran into the other night still burdened my mind.
Maybe it was the fact that my mind was constantly being eaten away by the fact that I no longer had a biological family.
Maybe the fact that memories were all that settled in my mind now, the small, sudden flashbacks would almost blind me and startle me, enough to almost make me fall over.
Or maybe it was the fact that they were far enough away to make me notice how they ran.

"Is Sam going to school today?"
My brother smiled and held my hand, trying to provide some comfort.
"No, honey, she's sick. Go get your sister. Tell her to get ready, the bus will be here,"
She sighed.
"That girl always does everything wrong. She's crazy."
I hated my mother for saying that.
"I'm coming!"
The blonde, curly haired girl ran from her room and smiled at me.
"Hey Sam." She said.
She seemed so happy.
That same beautiful sparkle was always in her cinnamon eyes.
She was perfect.
"Hey Lil." I smiled.
"I hope you get better." She said.
I nodded.
"Me too. I love you Lily. Be good." I smiled.
She went to hug me but mother slapped her away.
She nodded and sighed.
The bus pulled up and the two kids jumped up and ran out the door, dashing down the road...
One a darker haired, one a blonde, both waving back to me through the window.
Smiling.
Happy.

Gone.

Delirious POV:

"EVANNN! EVAN! OH MY GOD!"
We heard Tanner's screams from all the way outside.
We jumped up at once and dashed to them.
"Oh my God."
Z was lifeless, on the ground, her head a bloody mess.
"EVAN! SHE'S NOT BREATHING. SHE'S IN SHOCK!" Tanner had tears flowing down her cheeks, Z's blood on her hands.
Nanners was looking down at her, his hand over his mouth.
"What happened?" Evan tried to ask.
"NOW'S NOT THE TIME! MOVE MOVE MOVE!" Tanner screamed, scaring all of us.
She pushed a couple of us out of the way and she pulled off Z's vest, her shirt visible.
"Come in baby, don't die. Come on. Mommy has you. Z. Please. No, you're going to be okay. Breathe." She whispered.
I was scared she'd go into shock herself.
"Shit."
She cried.
She opened Z's mouth.
She did chest compressions and whenever her lips met Z's, Tyler whistled.
"Damn..." He grinned.
I glared at him and a loud slapping sound rang out.
"Fuck!" Tyler gasped.
Mini gritted his teeth.
"Not the time, Tyler. That's your mother." Craig whispered.
He whispered something about "mommy," under his breath and got slapped harder this time, his arm now a bright red.
Z had let out a high pitched scream and fell to the ground.
What had happened? Nobody hurt her. She just fell.
"Z? Can you hear us?"
Tanner tapped on the side of her face and Z opened her eyelids.
"Tanner." She said.
Tanner nodded and lifted her up.
My soulmate went to help her, but she pushed him away and she lifted her herself.
I almost jumped forward to defend my partner, but I remembered Tanner was an emotional wreck at the time, and Evan understood that, too.
She carried her inside and Evan took over Nanner's and Ohm's training.

Z POV:

"Tanner." I addressed her as she layed me down on the bed, her thin, short, fragile figure then sitting down next to me.
"Yes, darlin'?" She asked.
"I don't want them to do this." I whispered.
She layed down next to me and put her arms around me.
"I don't either, sweetheart."
She sighed.
"Hey, you know that device we used? The one we used to erase our families' memories, if we had one, so they wouldn't come looking for us?" I asked.
She nodded.
"How would I forget. They used it on my best friend."
"Do you know where it is?" I whispered.
She nodded.
"Of course. Why?"
"When the war is over," I struggled to get all this out.
"I want to erase their memories. I don't want gangs to exist anymore. Whoever lives from the war, ally or not," I told her.
"I want them to have lives. They can move on. The world wouldn't be such a mess."
She smiled and wrapped her arms tighter around me.
"You've always been an amazing girl, Z. You're so thoughtful, but what would we do?" She asked.
I almost started crying again.
The words I said that day were the first lies I've told Tanner.
"We'd move on together, get jobs. Find out how to improve. But no more violence. It'd be you and me."
But it wouldn't be me and her.
She'd be moving on as well.
But if I told her this...
She would refuse.
She wouldn't leave me.
"Will you help me?" I asked.
She sighed.
"If it will make all of us happier, if my kids get to live and violence won't break out,"
I closed my eyes, knowing she couldn't see me because hers were closed as well, and tried to hold back the tears.
"Then yes."

"Yes I will."
