Chapter One

I sprint down the hall, gunfire following hot on my heels before turning down an ominous corridor with flashing lights towards a huge door.

I whipped out my phone opened the pin code to open the door. Wes joined me shortly after I arrived, covering me while I punched in the 14 digit sequence of numbers. I pressed enter and waited for the pin pad to turn green. Instead, it was flashing red.

Not a good sign.

“Abigail…” I whisper in a sing-song voice. “The code’s not working”. I could almost sense her face of confusion through the ear piece. Wes stood behind me anxiously; gun ready, occasionally shooting warning shots at guards.

“I need a new code to get past the fail-safe because the security activated the alarm!” I warned Abby.

The pin was still flashing red, warning me I had 56 seconds to come up with the correct sequence of numbers.

“Hold on…There’s one more thing I can try” I heard Abigail say.

“Well, you have a little less than,” I looked at the pin pad once again. “43 seconds, so-”.  I was cut off as my phone buzzed with a new encryption code. “Let’s pray this works” I say to myself.

“Any day now” Wes exclaims as more armed men come to the entrance of the vault. He was firing his automoatic to ensure they stayed a reasonable distance away from us.

“Shut up-you know you love this” I mumble as I enter the last number.

The pin flashed green and asked then me for my thumb print. I pulled the rubber glove on my hand, with the finger prints of the CEO on it, and pressed my thumb to the scanner. The monitor scanned and  verified the print, granting me access to the vault.

“Let’s go!” I yell to Wes as I shove open the large door and step into the treasury. He had to duck and roll into the room before being able to help me shut the door.

We were locked in a room with more than a million dollars.

“Just as planned” I smile at Wes. I hear him chuckle before we get to work.

Using small C-4 explosives, we opened all of the safe deposit boxes, cramming thousands of dollars into our black backpacks.

“5 minutes” I call out and he nods in acknowledgment.

“You got that Abby?” I ask no one.

“I’ll be there, don’t worry” a voice says into my ear.

I finish stuffing a pile of new one hundred dollar bills into my bag and put it on my back, making sure it was properly attached to my vest.

“Wes” I say and he stops stuffing his pack to follow my lead, attaching the backpack to his own vest. We easily stuff another bag and follow the same procedure.

After that we break apart to clear the wall farthest from the entrance of the vault. I take out more C-4 and hand half of them to Wes. Together, we attach them to the wall, creating the outline of a rectangle in explosives.

“Where do we go again?” Wes asks, jokingly. I rolled my eyes as I continue fastening my C-4 to the farthest wall.

I pull his sleeve, leading him to the center of the room. “Here. I got one more application, just wait”

With less than a minute to go, I attach the final piece of C-4 and, after ensuring they were all properly connected, rejoined Wes in the middle of the now barren room.
