It's been a week since Riley came out to her parents, she was so happy they understood and didn't judge her. Maya on the other hand still hasn't told her mom, she doesn't want to add anything else on her plate because her mom is always busy. Riley keeps telling Maya almost everyday to tell her mom but what Riley doesn't understand is that not everyone's parents can be just as understanding as hers. Maya decided to tell her mom when she's ready, not when everybody expects her to.
Wednesday 12:15pm.
Maya and Riley make their way to lunch and Riley notices how quiet Maya was today. Maya knows that sooner or later Riley is gonna ask what's bothering her and honestly, Maya doesn't want anymore of Riley's advice about coming out to her mom. She wants to do it her way.
"What's wrong Maya?"
"Riles, I don't wanna talk about it, not now."
"Are you still thinking about coming out to your mom? She'll understand Maya, she loves you."
"Riley. I told you I didn't wanna talk about it and here you go bringing it up for the 10th time this week"
"Okay fine. I'm sorry. I only wanted to help."
"Ugh, no I'm sorry. Listen this is really hard for me to do and I appreciate you trying to help but this is something I need to figure out on my own."
"Then I won't mention it again."
Maya knew by Riley's last response that she was upset that she didn't want her advice but Maya really feels like she needs to talk to her mom alone.
Later on that day when Riley got home, she starts overthinking about how her and Maya's friendship was before they started dating. She starts wondering if their friendship is going downhill because of their relationship. When Riley first told Maya she liked her, she always worried that their friendship wouldn't be the same but Maya always told her that wasn't true and never would happen. Riley still had that thought in the back of her mind but today, that feeling came back.
Wednesday, 3:30pm.
Maya starts feeling bad about yelling at Riley earlier at lunch and she decided to just tell her that she wants to tell her mom alone and when she's ready. Ever since Riley told her parents, Maya feels like Riley is pressuring her to hurry and tell her mom but she's just not ready yet.
Riley is sitting in the Bay Window re-thinking everything, suddenly Maya appears and asks if they can talk.
Maya: Can I just explain why I acted like that today?
Riley: Because you wanna figure out on your own how to come out to your mom, I got it.
Maya: Yes but-
Riley: It's okay Maya, you don't have to apologize to me every time we have a little argument, it's fine.
Maya: But you seemed upset, I don't wanna upset you because of my problem.
Riley: Can I ask you something?
Maya: Sure.
Riley: Do you realize how much our friendship changed since we became a couple?
Maya: Riles come on, not this again.
Riley: Answer the question Maya.
Maya: No I don't realize how our friendship changed because it didn't. It never has and never will.
Riley: It changed already, I can't be the only one that realizes this.
Maya: Explain to me what changed.
Riley: We argue more, we barely talk about what we're really feeling, we keep things from each other and most of all, things seem like they are harder.
Maya: That's not true and relationships are hard, it wouldn't be a relationship if we didn't have hard times Riles. it's the same with friendships. Both bad and good times.
Riley: Just a week ago I was thinking about how things are so easy with us and now they just got harder.
Maya: They got harder because I didn't want your advice on one thing?
Riley: No not that, I've just been thinking and I think things have changed a lot and I don't like it.
Maya: So what does that mean?
Riley: It means that I want things to go back to how they used to be. I miss it.
Maya: Its starting to sound like you mean go back to when we weren't together..
Riley: That's not what I meant, I love being with you but I just..
Maya: You just don't love being with me as much as you love us being just friends... Riley, you talk about me not ever wanting change but look at you never wanting to try anything that might scare you or not be easy. Life isn't easy and things change no matter how much you don't want them to! Things aren't changing because we are in a relationship, they are changing simply because we are growing up! That's life Riley, no matter how hard you try to avoid it.
Riley: I can't just ignore what's happening. Our friendship isn't the same anymore.
Maya: You're right, our friendship isn't the same anymore but whose fault is that? I gotta go, I'll see you.... whenever.
