Chapter 10
"Where are we going?" Rapunzel asked Jack as he pulled her along.
"It's a surprise," Jack answered, giving Rapunzel a bright smile.
They had been walking through the kingdom for a few minutes. Jack was pulling Rapunzel along, trying to make it to the docks. He didn't know how long they had until the Festival of the Lanterns began, but he was determined to make it to the spot before it started.
The went down to the boat docks, walking down to the edge of a pier. There were no boats at the end, but Jack had been prepared for it.
"Awa, man!" Jack joked.
"What is it?" Rapunzel asked.
"No boats," Jack smiled to Rapunzel. "I guess that we'll have to go to plan B."
"I've seen that smile before, Jack," Rapunzel said, raising an eyebrow. "What's plan B?"
"Watch and learn, Punzie." Before Rapunzel could react, he wrapped his arm around her waist and began to fly. Rapunzel quickly wrapped her arms around Jack's neck tightly, breathing hard. This action made Jack's face turn red.
"Jack, don't let go!" Rapunzel said.
"Why would I?" Jack asked, giving a little laugh. "I would never let go, Punzie."
"We're really up high," Rapunzel observed. "I don't think I've ever been this high."
"Come on, Punzie!" Jack complained. "Here, we're going down now."
Jack slowly descended, touching the water and making it freeze. Rapunzel then stepped down onto the ice, taking her arms off from around Jack's neck. She gave a little sigh, before looking at him and saying, "That was actually kind of exciting!"
"Really?" Jack raised an eyebrow. "I thought that you were scared."
"At first," Rapunzel said. She suddenly took out her frying pan and hit Jack on the head.
"OWW!" He yelled, rubbing his head. "You hit me with a frying pan!"
"Don't ever just grab me out of the blue," She scolded. "That's what scared me. Heights don't scare me."
"Alright," He said. "I will make sure that I won't ever just grab you out of the blue. Unless you're in danger."
"Danger?" Rapunzel asked. "Why would I be in danger?"
"The world is a dangerous place."
Rapunzel nodded, understanding. "Why are we out here?"
Jack shrugged. "Greatest day of your life," He said, now smiling. "I thought that you might like a front row seat."
For a while, they sat on the ice, just waiting for the festival to begin. Then, Rapunzel saw the first lantern. Her heart skipped a beat as more and more came. She was grinning ear-to-ear, watching as the lights made their way towards them.
"This is amazing!" She laughed, touching lanterns that had now floated out to them. "It's wonderful!"
Jack smiled along with her, watching Rapunzel's joy. She looked very beautiful in the moonlight, with all of the lanterns floating around her like stars. For a moment, Jack wanted it to stay like this forever.
As the lanterns began to leave, Rapunzel sighed and leaned back against Jack. "This was the best birthday present ever." She told him.
Jack blushed. "I'm--glad that you like it," He said, lost for words.
"I love it," Rapunzel said, turning to look at him. She suddenly leaned up a tiny bit and kissed Jack's cheek, making him go even redder. Rapunzel laughed. "You look so cute when you blush." She said, making Jack blush even more(by now his face looked like a tomato).
