We had already mapped out the route to Alex's kingdom. There were quite a lot of questions asked as I was charting it.
"Why go that way? It's longer and, quite frankly, more dangerous," Alex argued.
"If we go this way, the guards that are looking for you will have less of a chance of running into us. Also, you brother will expect it less," I argued back.
"But-"
He stopped talking when I gave him a long, cold, icy stare.
Half way through the long silence that had accumulated amongst us, I began playing with my necklace.
The sharp edges of the crescent shaped pendent gleamed as the necklace twisted around my fingers.
Alex noticed this. "what's that?" He asked eagerly.
"Nothing. Shut up and pack food. This journey will take a bit."
"Goodness. I didn't mean to hit a nerve." He then, began doing as I instructed.
Zeera began following him as I gave Alex orders and did the thinking work myself.
"I believe that she has taken a liking to me," he chimed.
"She's just not used to having more than one person here," I lazily said. I was a hell of a lot more tired lately. I had been running errands for myself so much that it had sucked the life out of me.
"Well," he reached out to touch Zeera. She did this weird hissing sound. Apparently, owls can make those. This caught Alex off guard," I guess you're right."
It had been two hours. We had just finished the preparations. I flopped onto the couch and half moaned half sighed.
"Come now," Alex complained, "there's a kingdom that needs saving."
"The kingdom can wait one night," I said into the couch, "we leave in the morning. Be ready." That was the last thing I said before falling into a deep, much needed, sleep.
