Alex seemed to snap out of the trance. As, his head flung back a bit and his eyes weren't opened as wide as before.
In a state of pure shook he says the words, "FROST, ARE YOU OK?! I COULDN'T HEAR OR SEE ANYTHING! IT WAS ALL BLACK! NEXT THING YOU KNOW, MY FR- CARETAKER, I guess, IS LYING ON THE GROUND IN FRONT OF ME WITH HER SHOULDER BADLY WOUNDED!"
"It's ok. With a bit of gauze and stitches, this should heal up nicel-" my words froze. I had over analyzed his long sentence in my head. Wait a minute. The word he confused for caretaker. Was that supposed to be the word friend? If he slips up like that again, he may not want to leave. This is bad. I need him gone. I mean NEED him gone.
"Um, Frost?" His question pulled me back into reality.
"Wha?" I didn't even complete the word!? I'm such an idio-
"Everything ok?" He smiled.
This seemed odd to me. Throughout my years of being a witch, a smile was just something to cover up my magic. A facade as to what was going on. That's when I realized, the only time I'd actually ever smiled, was when I was faking it. But this time, when I smiled back, I felt like I wasn't hiding.
We began walking again after I gave no answer. He seemed to look at me more. What I mean by that was, it started with a quick glance. Then, a few more. Then, a full blown, head tilting, scan of me.
"Something wrong?" I questioned him.
His face seemed to turn into a pinkish color. It might have just been the lighting though. It was getting dark. "No!" He exclaimed. I think he got caught doing something. But what?
"Why were you looking at me like that?"
"I'm just worried about the wound. We don't need two hurt people on the journey. That would be bad. Wouldn't it?" He began talking fast.
"No problem," I smiled again. Not like the one beforehand though. More like the ones I had been doing my whole life. "We have Zeera," I reminded him.
"Right. But, she's just a bird."
"Can 'just birds' take down a Phoenix?" Though Zeera may have been a bitch bird at times, I still loved her like a sister. I'm not going to let my 'sister' become insulted by this ignoramus.
"What? No. Birds can't do that! You're telling me that Zeera isn't just a bird?" He seemed shocked.
I giggled. I didn't know I could still do that. "Of course, she isn't just a trained bird. She's a-" I stopped myself. Only witches have familiars. If I say this, I'm definitely caught.
"She's a...?" Alex was getting impatient. Oh shit, I'm done for.
"She's the spirit of one!" I blurted out. "She's dead. She can't die again, silly."
He seemed a little septic at first. However, he slowly made his way into believing it.
Great. Now I'm a liar too.
