OPHELIA HAD BEEN sat by the lake, when her brother had called her over. Reluctantly, she ran her hand through the water, and then heaved her back pack over her shoulders. Slowly, she made her way to where her sibling had been.
When she arrived at the RV, everyone had gathered around Shane, who had walked over towards both Ophelia and Griffin upon her arrival. At first, the raven haired man was uneasy, but after a nudge from her brother, the woman twitched the corner of her lips into a smile.
"You guys are riding with the Grimes folks, you two good with that?"
Ophelia rolled her eyes. The idea of being trapped within a car with Lori Grimes didn't sound pleasant at all. But still, she bit down harshly on her tongue and let her brother do the talking. "Sounds good."
"Alright, any problems let me know." Shane had said before he gave the two siblings a nod. Griffin returned it, ophelia hesitantly following suite.
Positioning himself within the middle of the small somewhat circle the group had formed, Shane cupped his face so that his voice was both clear and audible as he raised his voice. "Everybody listen up! Those of you with C.B s, we're gonna be on channel 40. Now, you gotta problem, you don't have a C.B or a signal or anything at all, y'all gonna hit the horn once and that'll stop the caravan. Any questions?"
No one had said anything, rather the majority shook their heads. As Ophelia stood with her arms crossed, observing the group, she arched a brow as, Morales and his family then stepped forward. Clearing his throat as he announced, "We're uh, we're not going."
She didn't blame him.
"We have a family in Birmingham, we wanna be with our people." His wife had added.
"You go on your own, you won't have anyone to watch your back." Shane pointed out, still Morales shook his head, responding, "We'll take the chance, I gotta do what's best for my family."
And then, even Ophelia had watched in awe as Sophia hugged her young friend of whom she had grown quite fond of over the past few weeks. She found it quite admirable, how she had always struggled to make friends as a girl, yet here Sophia was receiving a doll from a girl whom she had known for no more than a month. It was a refreshing sight really, that innocence had not vanished completely.
And as Ophelia gazed over at the Mexican family, she wondered if she would ever lay eyes upon them again, if so, how much would have changed by then? In this world, anything.
