I finally leave my job when my shift is over, having to work overtime. My head is slightly throbbing from breathing in coffee beans all day. When I reach my car I pop a ibuprofen in my mouth and take a swig of my water to wash it down. The daycare would be calling any minute to ask where I am, saying Kaylee is probably restless since we had no sleep last night due to the man banging on our door telling us we needed to pay the bills. I don't have the money right now.
I reach the daycare which is about ten minutes away from my job, thankful Mrs. Bella didn't call. I leave the car running, I'll only be a minute. The door are pushed open and im greeted with the lady at the front desk, Mrs. Hilda, and she motions for me to go ahead in. I do as so and find Kaylee and Bella sitting on the floor, Bella playing Barbies with her. Kaylee looks up and a smile stretches across her face as she stands up, running towards me.
"Mommy!" She exclaims and I catch her in her arms, setting her on my hips and oop her nose. She says bye to Mrs. Bella and right as were walking out the door Mrs. Hilda stops us. I fight back a groan and turn around, my most convincing smile on. I just want to go home and go to sleep.
"Mrs. Green, im afraid if you don't pay your monthly payment we'll have to ask you to take Kaylee out." I can feel the color drain from my face. What am I going to do now? Instead of answering her I nod and quickly make my way out the door. I wipe at the hot tears that pour down my cheeks, caused by what the lady at the daycare told me and climb in the car; after buckling Kaylee in her pink and yellow carseat. If I didn't pay my bill, I would have to take Kaylee out of the daycare. All my money is gone, its with Uncle Sam and Wal-Mart, being the only places I give my money to. I don't have the money to pay for my apartment or the money to keep her in the daycare any longer. What's happening to my life? It's falling apart! Ever since Kaylees father died, Keenan, my life has been a living hell.
I slow the car down behind a line of cars, completely stopped. Great. What else could go wrong today? Maybe on the way home someone will run in to me and my car will wrap around a pine tree because, you know, that's my damn luck!
"Mommy, are you OK?" Kaylee questions and I look in the rearview mirror at her. Her blonde curls bouncing on top of her shoulders as she fiddles around with her doodle pad.
"Yes, baby." I answer and finally the cars begin to move. I notice the cause of the line up. A pile of six cars are stacked on top of each other and I watch as an officer pulls a lady out of the front seat, people hurrying out of the ambulance and trying to put her on a stretcher. I cringe at the flashback, replaying in my mind as they took Keenan off on a stretcher after his car was basically ran up a tree.
"What are they do-"
"Why don't we listen to music!" I cut her off and turn the volume on the radio on. One Direction fills the car and I hear Kaylee quietly mouthing the words to What Makes You Beautiful.
"How do you know this song?" I laugh and look back at my daughter in the rearview mirror.
"Katherine." She answers simply. Oh, that's right! Mrs. Bellas daughter, Katherine, is a huge fan of these guys. She has millions of posters around her room and I'll never forget the way she jumped up and down and screamed when she got tickets for her sweet sixteen.
"I like Harry," she says and I can't help the giggle that falls from my lips. What does my daughter know about liking boys?
"He's cute." I agree with her because, well he is. They're all kind of cute, but I don't see the big deal with all their fans. Why are they so.. crazy?
As I reach my parking spot I turn the car off, grabbing my purse and climbing out of the car. I unbuckle Kaylee from her carseat and I hold her tiny hands as we walk to the apartment. From a distance I see something blue hanging from the door. Uh oh.
I silently pray it's not what I think it is, but as I approach it it's exactly that. An little blue eviction notice is hanging from my brown, paint-chipped door. I can feel the tears prick at my eyes. What am I going to do now?
I unlock my door and send Kaylee to her room.
"Why, mommy?" She asks. Why are kids so curious!?
"Well, uhm. We're going on a trip! Here," I walk to her room and pull a little pink suitcase out of her closet. I immediately begin putting her clothes in the suitcase, the zipper barely able to close as it struggles to stay zipped.
I tell her to help me pick up her toys and put them in the small yellow toy box. Not that she had many since we were practically poor, but she had some. I pull her sheets off her bed and take them to my room as I repeat the actions I did in Kaylees, packing my bag. After packing about four suitcases of clothes and odds and ins I take the bags out to my car. I successfully fit two of them in the trunk, and the rest in the back seat. I have no idea where we're going, but we need to find out quickly. Maybe I could call my mother... Nah.
I moved out for a reason, so I could prove to her I could make it on my own and not rely on her for the rest of my life. I can do it.. maybe.
"Come on, Kaylee!" I call through the bile in my throat and watch as she bounces down the stairs in her Minnie Mouse dress and red flatts. She's attempted to put her hair in a bun the way I do and I see she got into mommy's lipstick; It's scattered across her lips and thankfully its not waterproof.
"Don't you look gorgeous," I giggle and she flashes me a smile. A little bit of the red lipstick is smudged on her teeth and I reach down to wipe it off, along with the little bit that's spread around her lips.
"Tanks, mommy, Uhm. Can you fix my hair?" I giggle and nod my head as she turns around and I take the hair tie out, ruffling my hands through her beautiful blonde curls and putting it back up in a ballerina bun.
"Hop in," I say and open the door for her. She struggles to climb into the car but I pat her butt to give her a boost. I buckle her seat beat and take one more look at the apartment and climb into the car.
