I was walking home with Nate and Lina. We had extra time to talk because we had to take a long detour to go past Lina's house. It was nice to have a girl to talk to.
"So, as I was saying, I think we could convince the teacher that Danny was being so mean that he should be by himself." Nate said, waiting for my response.
"Come on Nate, Danny's not that bad, really." I said.
"What? You're kidding me." he replied.
Lina whispered something to Nate and he said, in falsely pleasant voice, "Oh, okay then, we won't do anything."
"Ok..." I replied slowly, surprised by his sudden change in mind.
When we arrived at Lina's house, I pulled her aside and asked her what she had said to Nate.
"I just told him that your too nice to be mean to somebody, even Danny Arthur." she said.
"I am not!" I exclaimed, "I can stand up for myself!"
"Oh, don't take it the wrong way," Lina quickly covered, "It's a good thing that you're kind-hearted enough to be nice to everyone, despite what they do to you."
"Oh, well thanks then." I said, blushing slightly.
We said our goodbyes, and Nate and I continued to my house.
He stalled me and said, "Can I talk to you?"
"We were talking." I replied.
"About something else."
"Go ahead."
"Do you like Danny."
"I don't hate him, but I might dislike him a bit..."
"No, I mean, do you like him more than a friend."
"What? Oh... no way!"
"Good."
"Why?"
"Because I was wondering if you wanted to go out with me."
"Umm...okay."
"Really?!"
"Yea. What did you think I would say?"
"I don't know."
I decided that I needed to know that he wasn't doing it for no reason.
"Why?" I asked.
"Why what?" he looked confused.
"Why did you ask me out?" I clarified.
"Because I like you." he said, like it was obvious.
"You do? But... why?"
Nate laughed at me.
"Don't laugh! What about me do you like?"
"Chloeeee... don't make me do this."
" Just tell me, please?"
"Okay, you're smart, pretty and nice, what's not to like?"
I felt my face grow warm, "umm... okay." I said again, flattered.
He grinned massively and hugged me.
When I got inside, my mum was standing at the door, smiling like a moron, " You have a boyfriend, you have a boyfriend." she taunted.
"Ugh." I groaned, pushing past her, " Don't start, Mum."
My mum wouldn't shut up about it all night. I would have cracked it at her, but I think she needed this to take her mind off of dad, so I didn't.
Besides, it was nice to have a boyfriend. Especially Nate. I've never really thought about it, but if I dated anybody, I'm glad it's him.
After texting him until late, I laid down thinking about all the good things about him. His nice black shoulder-length hair, his glasses and his tall, gangly figure.
He was what the other girls would say is cute, but not hot. Not only that, but he was smart and really nice.
I fell asleep thinking how strange the feeling of someone liking me was.
The next day at school, Reena and Tina treated Lina like they were never mean to her and like she was going to get over this lapse of sanity and return to their group.
To their dismay, she chose us. Everyone shut up and stared as she walked away from her sister and the popular group for the nerds.
"You don't have to..." I began, as she got over to us.
"No," she cut me off, "It's time I showed some proper independence. Besides, I get along with you two way better than them anyway. They just talk about boys and clothes, its really uninteresting."
"Okay." I smiled, " Oh, and we have something big to tell you at lunch."
"What?"
"It's a surprise."

"You guys are what-now?" Lina practically screamed.
"We're dating." I said, looking over at Nate and smiling.
"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!" she gushed, jumping up and down and clapping her hands, " When's your first date?"
"Friday." we chorused.
