Chapter 5

*Alex POV"

"So how did you meet John?"

Eliza looked up from her food. "Oh, we met a few years ago when he came to New York looking for a place to stay. I don't remember exactly where we were but I started talking to him and learned he needed a place to stay. I texted Peggy and Angie quick and asked them if it would be okay if he stayed with us until he found a place. He ended up staying for 3 weeks and finally found an apartment in Lower Manhattan. We stayed in touch after that."

"John wasn't with his family?"

"I guess not. I didn't ask him about that when we met, and I never really wanted to pry."

"Oh" I thought about how old John would've been when he met Eliza. John was 21 now, so he might've been 19. I wonder why he left home so quickly.

*John POV*

I was reading in my bed when I felt my phone vibrate next to me. It was Peggy.

Pegleg: Can you come over? I want to talk about something 💛

I replied back

JohnnyBoy: Yeah, on my way

I made my way to her dorm. I knocked on the door and she opened it immediately. I was a little shocked at what I saw. Her hair was a mess and she looked like she had been crying.

"Are you okay?"

"Just come in"

I walked inside and we both sat down on the couch. I looked her in the eyes. "What's wrong?"

"Nothings wrong. I just need some help."

"Peg. What's going on?"

"I'm uh.. gay"

"OH MY GOD PEGGY THATS GREAT. IM SO HAPPY FOR Y-"

"Shhhhh. Keep your voice down. No one else knows about this."

"Not even Eliza or Angie?"

"No"

"Wait why are you so upset over this? I'm glad you figured out what you are."

"That's the thing. I.. I think I'm genderfluid. I'm not sure though. Its really confusing. Sometimes I feel like a boy and other times I feel like a girl but then I feel like both and neither and-"

I cut her off and hugged her. "Whatever you are, we will all love you. I know you're confused but you'll figure it out. It might take a while, but you'll get there. Until then, how about we try to help you figure it out. I had a friend back in highschool who was genderfluid and they wore different colored necklaces based off how they were feeling. How about we start with that?"

"That's a really good idea"

"I will buy the necklaces for you, okay? We can have yellow be feminine, orange be both/neither, and dark blue be masculine, okay?"

She shook her head and hugged me. "I knew you would be able to help me. Thank you"

The next day I went to some off campus farmers market I heard about, looking for necklaces for Peggy. I finally found a set that had the right colors, and looked decent.

I walked around a little more and found a bunch of colored bracelets that were nicely made and they were only $1 per bracelet. I thought that it might be nice for everyone in our group to have a bracelet. I bought 7 different colored bracelets. We would each get a different color. Peggy would get yellow, Eliza blue, Angie pink, Laf purple, Herc black, Alex green, and I would get light blue.

I walked back to Peggy's room. It was around 7:30 at night. I knocked on her door, but no one answered. The lights that were on shined underneath the door, which meant someone was in there. I knocked once more, but no one answered. I checked to see if the door was open, oddly it was. I opened the door and I saw Peggy lying on the ground in the middle of her room. I raced over to her. I checked her pulse. She was still alive and breathing normally. I called out her name. "Peggy!" "Peggy, wake up" I ran over to the sink and got a cup of cold water. I slowly poured the water on her. Thankfully she woke up.

"wha.. WHAT THE FUCK"
She opened her eyes and saw it was me.
"JOHN WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING"
I sat her upright and grabbed a towel. "Peggy, I think you passed out"
"I did? The last thing I remember is.. oh.. Yeah. I did pass out. I'm sorry for yelling."

"Peggy what happened??"
She looked down and quietly said "I guess I had a panic attack"

I turned her so she would face me. "Are you okay now?"

"Yeah, I'm fine now. Everything just came crashing down at once and I didn't know what was happening."

I hugged the small girl and held her there, rubbing circles in her back. "Peggy?"
"Yeah?"
"If you ever need help, I'm always here for you. Okay? I love you Pegs."
She sniffed "Love you too John."

I gave her the necklaces and bracelet, and started to go back to my own dorm. It was around 9:45 at this point. I opened the door and saw Alexander typing on his laptop. He never stops writing does he?

"Hey"

"Hey"

"Here, I got you this." I handed him his bracelet.

"What's this for?"

"I got everyone a bracelet and you're a part of our group now, so here you go. I hope you like the color."

"I love it. Green is my favorite color." He smiled and looked up at me. "Well I'm glad you like it"

He got up and hugged me. He was very small compared to me.
"I've never had a group of friends before. I hope that I make you all proud. Thank you John"

I hugged him back and then we both let go. We continued to talk for another hour. Alexander had been waiting for me to make the first dinner that wasn't going to be made using the microwave. He cooked grilled cheeses for both of us, while I made a salad. The grilled cheeses were surprisingly good. We talked until around 12:30, when we both passed out on the couch.
