Five days later, while Roxy practised kickboxing with Donovan, Max strolled into the pit followed by Benny and Collin. Max looked a bit tired with dark circles under his eyes and pale coloration of his skin. Roxy noticed them from the corner of her eye but she didn't stop.
"Max," Donovan said, "Waddup, man? You don't look good."
Max breathed out and said, "Thanks, bro, a bit tired."
"Where are the other boys?" He asked.
"Coming. I got news. Some important ones."
Roxy stoped and took a breath. She didn't like the tone of his voice. She had a feeling that it wasn't something comforting. Of course it wouldn't be comforting with Tai Xing on loose.
Few minutes passed by they sat in silence when the rest of the boys entered the pit all lightened and brightened.
"You called." Said Ernest when Max just nodded. They sat in a circle.
"Well?" Donovan said, "So what's it about?"
"Time." Max scratched the back of his neck that made him look ridiculously amazing, "We ain't got enough time. I and the other leaders conversed this matter up. Gang members are getting killed. The thing is getting lowkey ugly."
"Killed?!" Roxy exclaimed, "What do you mean, killed?"
"Well, rumours have it that Xing's men are doing this. It's already started." He said, all stressed out, "See, you guys gotta stay on guard 'cause anything can happen now. You never know. They're Koreans. They're like masters of killing. Kung Fu, Karate and all these stuffs. You just gotta stay safe."
Max caught his breath, "And you, Roxette, you're the one who's gotta turn on your guard. Freaking tight, you gettin' me?"
Roxy didn't like it then someone would call her by her full name. It gave her the chills and now she was totally getting it.
"M-me?" She stuttered, a bid of sweat running down the side of her forehead.
"Yeah, you might be all trained up and stuff but we don't know your background. You didn't grow up a stray. You've never faced this kinda situation so it's a first for you."
"I think I can handle this," Roxy tried to reason.
"You think." Donovan broke in, "You just think."
"But I-" She got interrupted by him.
"Roxy, it's freaking dangerous. It's fucking murder in here. Something once lost is lost forever. You gotta keep it safe."
Donovan was never so protective over her as he was now. His eyes were truly concerned and so was his voice. Roxy couldn't but listen to him.
"Okay so," Max said, "During the combat, you'll stick with Donovan. He can keep you outta all this shit, can't you brother?"
He thought for a moment, "Yeah I can."
"Perfect!" Max said under his breath, "Now it's time for you guys to get to work."
+++++
That might Roxy couldn't fall asleep. She constantly thought about what they had discussed earlier and it seemed to bug her. If there was gonna be a combat it would surely be ugly. She was partly excited and partly afraid.
What if she got . . .?
No bad thoughts, you stupid girl.
She shook her head and turned to her side. The room was pitch black but she could make out the dark course walls. The faint light from the window sipped in and made the room look sketchy. She had never been afraid of the dark. Never as in from the time she could remember.
There was a faint click sound from somewhere Roxy could not track but that made her twitch a little and she steadied herself in position. She was now leaning on her arm. She looked at the door as that's where she thought the sound may have come from.
Click click clack.
"Max?" She whispered but no one answered. The sound had stopped and silence poured over her like lava pouring over solid cool ground. She stayed in her position for a minute but nothing moved in the darkest corners of the room. She finally gave in and crashed on her body.
There was nothing. Maybe she was dreaming about the sound.
She turned to the other side and tried closing her eyes.
All of a sudden, there was a loud crack sound and the door smacked open. Before she could turn around, a pair of muscular arms grabbed her. A handkerchief was smacked on her face and she tried to breathe in for oxygen. Instead, she breathed in a high smell like that of a carbon compound and passed out.
