'Do you ever actually eat the sushi?' I asked, watching as the girl, (Y/n) picked up our order and stuffed it into her small, leather bag.
'Sometimes. I'd just prefer to save it for Yuki. She only gets dry food at the café and I like buying her sushi so she feels more like a cat. She really likes eating proper meat.' (Y/n) and I had been going to the same sushi shop together for the past 6 months and I was honestly falling harder for her than I should've. I couldn't help myself. 'Speaking of which, why do you come with me? Aren't you ever busy?'
'No, no. Never. I'd much rather sit in a room of cats with you than anything else...unless that's weird. If it's weird than I'm sorry.' I apologised for nothing as (Y/n) and I stepped out of the cold shop and began to walk down to the café. She was slightly more chirpy than usual. The chains on her black jeans bounced enthusiastically with each step she took and her loose grey shirt gently swayed as she moved. I was honestly lovesick. (Y/n) messed up my head so much I couldn't think straight.
'That's not weird, Chris. If anyone is weird, it's me. I get up at 6:00 every morning to feed and tend for a cat.' (Y/n) giggled, skipping slightly as we began to get closer and closer to our destination. 'I love Yuki, so much. The poor girl has been through so much and...she's one of the only people that makes me happy anymore...' (Y/n)'s smile twitched slightly as we reached the front of the cute café. As usual, it was bustling with cats and pretty girls. I held the door open for (Y/n), only to be met with heartbreak.
'H-Hi, (Y/n)...' The girl with red piggy-tails was at the door, as usual. A distinct frown was sticking to her face and (Y/n) was already beginning to worry.
'What's wrong? What happened?'
'It's Yuki...s-she...she slipped off of the table this morning and broke her neck...' The lady's voice cracked as she broke the news to (Y/n). I could practically feel her heart shattering into two. Her legs began to tremble and subtle whimpers left her dry lips. 'I-I'm so sorry...'
'It...it's fine. It's fine.' (Y/n) told herself, turning around to face me. She looked cold, her eyes were darker than usual and she looked pale. 'Lets go.' She muttered, tears beginning to well in her dead eyes.
'We...still have some of her toys if you'd like them...'
'No...its fine...'I was afraid to say anything to her. I couldn't read what was going through her mind. I followed behind her as she wandered back to her home like a zombie, her convulse shoes dragging against the foot path. I wanted to ask what she was feeling, why she cared so much for Yuki but she had this vibe that turned me into an obedient sheep. I didn't even consider stepping away or slowing down, I just had to keep walking behind her.
(Y/n) pushed her front door open, her knees trembling as though they were about to give out at any moment. '(Y-Y/n)? I-Is everything alright? D-Did you need me to-'
'No...it's fine...everything is fine...' Her tone was almost as low as mine by that point. She sounded like a demon from the darkest depths of hell. She shuffled through the lounge room and into the kitchen, slipping her hand onto the counter and wrapping her cold fingers around the handle of a knife. My lips went dry and blood turned to ice. I kept following her out of the kitchen and down the hallway until she paused in front of her bedroom door. 'Don't...don't come in...I don't want you to see anything that might traumatise you...' She huffed. I was beyond discombobulated at that point.
I was scared.
She had the ragged breathing of a psychopath, the eyes of a vampire and the tone of a killer. There was obviously something triggered this creature inside of her and I didn't know how to help. She kept her head down, slowly slipping into her bedroom and shutting the door. There was a sudden crash, followed by belted screams that sounded like a man undergoing torture. 'Why? Why won't you just kill me?' She screamed. I felt a sudden energy surge through my body as I swung the door open, eyes widening at the sight. Her dresser was lying across the floor and (Y/n) was sitting on the back of it, continuously plunging her kitchen knife into the hard wood. She had snapped, all sanity fleeing from her body faster than lightning. Her wrists and palms were coated with small cuts and tears were spilling from her eyes. 'I can't fucking take it anymore! Stop doing this and just kill me!' Without saying a word, I kneeled behind her and reached over her shoulder, gripping the blade before she could wreck her dresser any further. The blade slit deep into my hand but I could barely feel it over the rapid thumping in my chest. I was so close to (Y/n) that my chest pressed against her back and it admittedly made me slightly flustered. My blood was beginning to drip onto her dresser but I didn't let go. I gripped the metal and refused to let go. 'C-Chris...' She began, her energy dying down. '...I can't take this...I'm a bloody curse...e-everyone I get close to dies...I just...I loved Yuki...s-she was my only friend...M-My band mates don't even talk to me unless they have to...I-I'm so alone...' She finally let go of the handle, almost giving me permission to take it from her. I dropped it beside me and shifted my position until I was planted on my bum and my legs were around (Y/n) so that she was sitting between my legs. My hand trembled yet it still felt like nothing. (Y/n) needed me and I couldn't let something so small stop me from helping her. 'E-Everyone I've ever...ever been with...t-they're all dead and I...I'm so afraid. I'm so scared, Chris...'
'(Y/n)...can...can I tell you something?' I murmured, wrapping my arms around her waist. Her breathing hitched as I pressed my forehead against her shoulder, finally relaxing. 'I...ever since meeting you six months ago, I've...I felt...You just...you just do something to me, (Y/n)...I just...can't think straight around you...and...I know that's not what you want to hear but...it's what you need to hear. I'm not going anywhere, (Y/n). I'll never leave you, I promise.'
'Stop it...stop making my stomach feel funny...I only bring bad luck...I want to be alone...' She strained against my grip slightly, wanting to finally be done with humanity.
'But when you're alone...are you truly happy?' She suddenly froze after hearing my words, pain and loneliness creeping into her eyes in the form of tears.
'N-No!' She shouted, beginning to cry. She leaned her head back slightly, letting the tears build up in her eyes rather than letting them slip across her red cheeks. I lifted my hand, holding it over her eyes so her tears could take refuge on my skin.
'Don't cry...tears don't suit you.'
She spent so long with the back of her head pressed against the crook of my neck that she seemed to pass out. The poor thing, even as I lifted her up and gently slipped her into bed, tears dripped from her eyes. She was trembling in her sleep. Knowing she wouldn't wake up for a while, I cleaned up the wound on my hand and went for a completely normal walk to the plaza.
To buy a completely normal thing.
For a completely unusual girl.I shot up in cold sweat, my heart racing faster than a silver bullet and my hands trembling like leaves in the wind. My room was completely tidy, save for the ruined dresser that had been put back in its place. Before I could bring myself into a functioning mental state, I was greeted by a cute little voice.
Meow.
My head shot over into the direction of the noise, only to be greeted by four sets of eyes. One was a black cat with glowing green eyes and no front legs which honestly made my heart skip a beat. Another was an orange cat with large round, almost pink eyes that had its back legs sprawled behind them uncontrollably. The third one was a completely hairless cat with only one eye and a glistening pink nose. The last one was a completely white cat, just like Yuki. It had no tail and seemed to struggle holding itself up. I held my arms out instinctively, lifting each of them onto my lap one-by-one. They were all so kind and gentle, immediately trusting me with their safety. I gave each of them turns with sniffing my slightly sweaty fingertips and getting to know my smell. 'You...you're all just like me...'
'(Y/n)? Are you awake now?' I heard Chris call from behind my closed door.
'Y-Yes...' He slowly entered the room, a familiar disposable cup in his hand. The pink exterior matched the cups they sold at the cat café we always went to. Chris stepped towards me, planting himself on the edge of my bed. 'W-What's with...all these cats?'
'I adopted them for you...I went to the shelter after you fell asleep and adopted all the cats that were about to be euthanised. I thought they'd cheer you up. The orange one is Waffles, the black one is Frisky, the hairless one is Bella and the white one is Muffin.'
'B-But how...how did you afford all the stuff they need?'
'That café we go to gave up everything they could for you. They really love you there...'
'W-What about collars? A-And food?'
'I've already bought all that stuff. Just enjoy your friends...' Chris smiled kindly at me, reaching down to run his calloused hand over Muffins' fur. I was amazed. Chris had done so much for me.
'Y-You...f-for me?'
'Of course. I-I love you...And when you love someone, you buy them cats, right?'
'Right...Does that mean I need to buy you a cat now?'
