'La! La! La! La! La! Boys and girls of every age! Wouldn't you like to see something strange!' I skipped across the school, not caring about the people around me. My pastel pink skirt bounced up and down as I danced to the back of the school, headphones covering my ears. I happily gazed at my destination, noticing a ring of people right near it. Curiosity overtook me as my skipping shifted to shuffling. I slid the headphones blasting Marilyn Manson's "This Is Halloween" cover down my head until they hung lazily from my neck. I finally heard the loud yelling coming from the circle of boys, along with the gargling sounds that made pain shoot through my mind like a bullet.
'Fuck him up!'
'Kick his arse!'
The closer I stepped, the more clear the noises became. Eventually, I got close enough to hear the sounds of violent punches and heavy pants. 'That'll fuckin' teach him. C'mon, lets get outta here.' The circle quickly dispelled, some people even commenting on my presence. I finally saw it, the boy lying on the grass, blood dripping from his nose and mouth. I quickly gasped and kneeled beside the boy, yanking a packet of tissues out of my jumper pocket. I hooked my arms under his shoulders and leaned him against the back of the office which was less than a meter away from him. He was panting heavily, lips parted, glistening with saliva and blood.
'O-Oh gosh...Oh jeez.' I chewed my lip, plucking a tissue from the packet and beginning to drag it across the boys' lips, collecting the blood. I was sat on his lap, unaware of the position I put myself in. I was too worried to think about it. The boy had his eyes shut, too weak to bother looking at me. I grabbed a new tissue and began wiping up the dirt that covered his arms and face. 'A-Are you okay, sir?' I stuttered out, skimming the tissue across his bloody nose.
'I-I'm...I'm fine...J-Just a few bruises...' He replied, his dark voice making my breathing hitch. I paused for a moment, letting my eyes wander across his creamy white skin and black clothing. His hair was the typical long, side-swept black fringe with everything else being short. His lips were decorated with two rings, one on either side of his bottom lip and one stud in the centre.
'Y-You're still bleeding! I-I'll go get the nurse!' I stood up but immediately felt the boys' grip trap my wrist.
'No! N-No just...I'm fine, really...' Our eyes met. My heart skipped a beat as his brown eyes graciously loomed over my pink skirt and light-blue jumper that was much too big for me. My shoes were simple light-blue converse runners with white laces that made me look more like a child than a 18 year old high-school student. 'Honestly, I'm fine...'
'A-At least let my finish cleaning you up...' I didn't give him much of a choice. Before he could protest, I plopped back down on his lap and picked the packet of tissues back up from beside him. 'W-What happened anyway?' I asked, twirling the new tissue and plugging up his bleeding nose with it.
'J-Just...Just some guys who don't like me too much...B-By the way...M-My name is Chris.'
'(Y-Y/n). Why don't they like you?' I skimmed my fingertips over the bruise that coated his cheek. Without bothering to ask, I lifted his shirt and gasped at the tens of bruises that were strewn across his chest and stomach.
'I-I have a brain...They don't like that.'
'S-Surely they're not that mean, right? T-There must be some proper reason...' I was shocked by the idea of someone hurting someone else for such a stupid reason. Chris seemed so kind so why?
'You're new here, aren't you?'
'H-How'd you know?'
'You haven't had the kindness sucked out of you by those roughens yet. You're probably the only kind soul in this school...' I slipped his shirt back down, defeated by the fact that I wasn't magic and couldn't make his bruises disappear.
'I'm sorry I didn't do anything sooner...You must be in so much pain...Those meanies, I don't like them!'
'You already know how I feel about them considering they probably broke my nose.'
'How can you be so calm? You're in pain!'
'And I have been since I came here. This school is a hell-hole and I've been coming here five days a week for the past six years, including this one.' I was slightly frustrated by his outlook on the situation. He wasn't phased by his own blood anymore.
'I'm sorry...I shouldn't have yelled...'
'Don't apologise...Are you busy today?' My head shot up at his words. I could already feel my heart rate begin to speed up as I shook my head and listened closely to him. 'Would you like to have dinner as a thanks? I'll probably need help getting home anyway...' My parents would hate me if I did, but Chris was in pain and I wanted to make him feel better. I was just going to have some dinner and leave, that's all. No big deal.
'S-Sure...'
