Chapter 13
Damn Surprises
Whilst on the outing with them, I surprisingly discovered that both Alice and Kyle live on my street. Kyle lived further up the street, whilst Alice lived more at the start of the street, and then I lived somewhere round the middle. Because of this new found information we decided that on some mornings we would walk together to school.
So, this morning I walked down the steps of my porch and walked up to Alice’s house. Her house was similar to mine from the outside, except she had two rocking chairs on her porch whereas we had a two seat swing chair and her house was slightly larger looking than ours.
I walked up to the mahogany door and lifted my hand to knock, but before I could, the door was already opening. And the person who stood before me was the last person I expected to see.
“What are you doing here?” We both said in unison.
Axel had an eye brow raised and arms crossed over his slight muscular chest which could be faintly seen through the white t-shirt. I quickly averted my eyes back to his face. His dark brown hair was tousled and slightly damp like he just had a shower. His emerald eyes were looking at me now with a playful glint in them.
“Duh. I live here. What are you doing here? Hope you’re not stalking me?” he said with a teasing smile.
“Why the hell would I stalk you? The only thing that stalks you is a rancid stench of bins.” I said looking away with a smug expression when I saw his face fall from that smirk.
Wait. My head flew back to look at him. Did he just say he lives here? Whaaaat?
“Hey! I do not smell like bins! I just had a shower I’ll have-“
He didn’t finish his sentence because at the moment Alice bounded down the steps and ran to the door, shoving Axel out the way. He stumbled slightly but remained his balance.
“Hey Rose! Let me just grab my shoes and bag and lunch and find my scarf and, well… Give me five minutes.” She smiled then dashed away.
“Alice! I am standing right here!” Axel yelled after her. “And Mum said the sandwiches are on the kitchen table.”
I then heard a faint ‘Thanks’ from inside the house.
I had the most quizzical expression on my face right now. Why on earth was Axel here and why was Alice being so calm about it? Axel saw my expression.
“What?” he questioned slowly.
“You live here? As in ‘live’ live here? Like seriously live here?”
“Yeah. As in I have a room with a bed ‘live here’ and eat food from my fridge ‘live here’. Why are you acting so surprised…unless. She hasn’t told you yet. Has she?”
At the point Alice came back to the front door, shoes on, bag on shoulder and holding two sandwiches.
“Who told who what?” she said whilst stuffing one sandwich in the bag and shoving one towards Axel.
“You haven’t told her that you’re my annoying little sister and I’m your amazing big brother.” Axel replied hitting her on the head with the wrapped up sandwich.
Huh? What did he say?
“I wouldn’t go that far in saying you’re amazing because you failed a simple task this morning. Why didn’t you wake me up?” Alice said hands on hips.
“I’m not your alarm clock Sis. And it was funny seeing you dashing about like a lunatic.” Axel sniggered to which Alice replied with a kick to his shin.
