Every bone in Aaron's body felt like bricks as he relived that moment. Hamilton, falling onto the ground, half dead. The bullet that Aaron had shot; lodged into Alexander. His wife, sobbing. His children would be devastated.
His hands trembled as he walked up to his home. It didn't feel like home anymore. Nothing felt normal. He killed Hamilton. He ruined a family for simply glory.
Opening the door, he saw his wife watching their children play. Their children. They'd have to deal with their father being a murderer. He'd known he'd bring shame upon them; why had he done it?
" Aaron! " she gasped, getting up and lunging at him. She firmly gripped him. " Y-you're alive. Alexander is..? "
" Dead. " Aaron stated without realizing it, his eyes widening. (Y/N) backed off and covered her mouth, her eyes wide. Behind her, one of their three boys and the girl, not even noticing. Just stuck in their fantasy world.
The two boys, having been in the kitchen and listening, were speechless. Their dad killed someone; a man with a family, like theirs.
" A-Aaron.. are you sure he's..? " she asked, gripping her skirts. He nodded solemnly, walking inside and up to the bedroom. His wife trailed behind him.
" Dad's a murderer, " the sixteen year old son had mumbled, pale faced. He gripped the counter, tears threatening to fall out of his eyes.
" Don't say that! W-we're going to be fine. Dad's not a murderer, I'm sure Hamilton is fine! It was just.. " the fourteen year old rambled, cutting himself off, and staring at the other.
" Don't say that. We can't have optimism right now. We know he's dead. Dad killed him, D-dad.. " he inhaled, tears now steadily working down his face.
The ten year old daughter walked in. " H-hey guys, what's wrong? Why can I hear mom and dad arguing up there? "
" Please don't freak out, okay? But dad.. " the sixteen year old took a sharp intake, " Dad killed the man he was dueling. "
The daughter gaped. " D-dad didn't kill him! There's no way dad.. dad couldn't.. " she stumbled over her words, unable to find what she was looking for.
" Dad did. Dad isn't some perfect little bird. I've known how he is for awhile. I had a feeling something would go down, but dad.. I think I need to run away, " the oldest boy said.
" I'm just going to leave for awhile. Okay? Either you won't see me again or I'll come back tonight. " the boy stated, marching out, the two watching him walk out and slam the door.
The married couple upstairs were too busy yelling that they didn't realize the family was torn.
Aaron's bullet managed to tear two families that day.
