"Congratulations chick, you're today's lucky winner" smiled the women behind the counter. I just starred at her, waiting for her to say 'just kidding', but she never did. She asked for my basic information, name, phone number etc. After a few minutes of silence, she handed me an envelope. "Enjoy" the overly perky women said. I smiled and headed out.
I drove home, completely lost. I hadn't touched the envelope since the women had given it to me. It was 2am, this day sucked and I didn't even know what was happening. I went straight to bed.
The next morning, I woke up in a good mood, don't ask why, bc I don't know. I totally forgot about the envelope, and Mike. Then I realized I had to work today, in 25 minutes actually. I quickly got ready for work and headed out.
I worked a double today, because I obviously could use the money. But I was finally able to clock out. I grabbed my bag and headed out to my car. Instead, I headed out to my car, and Mike. I instantly got nervous. He was just leaning on my hood, smiling at me.
"You're confusing you know" he chuckled. I couldn't tell if he was being angry and sarcastic, or what, but I was nervous."How long have you been out here?" is all I managed to say. "A couple hours." Mike was now standing in front of me. I couldn't say anything, I didn't know what to say, I had nothing to say. "So, yesterday?" Mike interrupted the awkward silence. Of course he brought up a topic I was hoping to avoid. "What do you want from?" I snapped. I apparently decided I was going to put an end to destiny's evil plan. He just looked at me, speechless. "Whatever, just tell destiny whatever her plan was, it's over." I walked passed Mike and opened my door to get in. "Who?" I looked over and Mike looked confused. Was he being serious or just playing stupid. "You know who." I got in my beaten up car. Mike rushed over and got in the other side, "what are you talking about? Am I not allowed to talk to a girl I happen to find attractive and fun?"
Wait, what did he just say? Me, attractive? This was really a joke.
"If you're not interested just say so, and I'll be gone. Because your mind games don't really give a straight answer. You kicked me out of your house, then call me back to kiss me, then make me leave again." He let out a little laugh.
Once again, I was speechless and confused. I turned my car on and drove home, not saying a word the whole time. Once we arrived at my lovely home, I motioned for Mike to follow me. As we went up the stairs I noticed my door was open. "No, no, no" I rushed in, mike following. I had just assumed I left the door open and was worried my cat had gotten out. But, my cat was there, along with all of my now broken furniture, well the furniture that was left.
I instantly started balling my eyes out. Mike put his arm around me, but didn't say anything. Then I remembered the envelope. If it was still here, that could be my spirit lifter. I shoved off Mike's arm and bolted to my room and searched for my bag like my life depended on it, which I guess it kind of did at this point. I couldn't find it, I began to panic. "What are you looking for?" Mike mumbled. "My bag" I shouted accidentally. I waited for a response but it never came, I peeked over my shoulder and he was gone. Whatever, I had more important things to worry about.
A few seconds later I herd Mike clear his threat. I turned around. He held my bag, I forgot I brought it to work, I left it in the car. I rushed over to him, "thank you thank you thank you." I snatched my bag and sat on my bed. I pulled out the envelope and starred at it. Mike sat down next to me, "What's that?" I took a deep breath and opened it. I closed my eyes and stuck my hand in.
My eyes popped open and I ripped my hands out of the envelope. Mike raised an eyebrow. "Three hundred thousand dollars, I won three hundred thousand dollars yesterday." I shot up off my bed. "That's awesome!" Mike smiled. He's right, it was awesome, but I didn't know what to say or do. I sat back down and we just sat in silence for what must have been 15 minutes. I finally cut the silence.
"I can move. I don't have to live in this hell much longer."
