Chapter 9: Skipping
“Starships” by Niki Minaj blasted through my speakers to wake me up at, say, 5:00 am. I sighed and rolled over, I had about an hour to get ready and walk to the portal that would take me right into the school. I found out that I was sharing a dorm with two girls named Bailey and Marissa. Both had Fire or Earth talents like me, and we had lots of classes together because of that.
The uniform, sadly, was a pair of black or khaki pants and either deep red, navy blue, or white shirt. I chose to wear black skinny jeans and a white shirt today, putting on a brown belt and curling my hair softly. I clasped my sun necklace around my neck, added a dab or mascara and lip gloss, and made my way into the lounge where Ashton was waiting.
“Morning!” she said cheerfully.
“Morning.” I said, less awake.
“So, you’ll go to the cafeteria first thing, where you’ll be assigned your dorm and given your schedule. Have your suitcase?” I nodded, gesturing to the two full suitcases in my hands.
“Good! Ummm… I guess that’s it!” Ashton smiled and lead me out of the room and down a hallway, into a plain room. Where there should have been a wall was a window into another plain room, with a few small tables, one window, and plain paneling.
“Where’s that?”
“That’s the top floor of the school. The fourth. So you’ll have to walk down quite a few stairs, and the cafeteria doors are the biggest ones to the left of the staircase.”
I nodded and stepped through, being brought into a completely different place than before. I looked behind me and couldn’t even see the room where I had been in before. I waved at an invisible figure on the other side of the portal, and stepped through the small door that lead to another hallway.
I walked down at least eight flights of stairs before I made it to the main hallway, where around eighty or so students were milling around before we were called to the cafeteria. I searched the heads for Opal or Alicia or even Helix, but none of them were in sight. I sighed and stepped down the remaining stairs, looking around for someone that looked friendly.
A small but busty girl ran over to me, her blond curls spilling around her shoulders.
“Hey! You must be Annabelle, I’m Bailey!” she greeted, chipper.
“Hey! Yeah… Where’s Marissa?”
“Oh, she’s always late to everything! Since, you know, this is our second year here. It’ll be great to have a new face in our dorm!”
I nodded absentmindedly and continued looking around.
“Did Opal go here last year?” I asked.
“Who’s Opal?” Bailey said, and I tuned her out as she began talking about the teachers and different activities they have here. I don’t plan on participating in anything but living and getting ready to take Ashton’s place as the Queen of the Sun Lands. I only just realized that I hadn’t seen her do much work, but it’s not like I’d been here long anyways.
A lady who introduced herself briefly as Madame Laurence, the headmistress of the school, lead the student body into the cafeteria, where there were actually signs on the table that said who sat there. They all said things like, “Air Gift” and “Rock Gift” or things like that. I, however, was directed to a table labeled “Heirs & Trainees” where to my surprise, no one else was sitting there. I didn’t know what Trainees meant, and it was obvious that Opal wasn’t here.
An adult that looked like a teacher walked by, and I tried to grab his attention.
“Excuse me! Sir? What are trainees?”
“Oh! They help you when you rule.” He quickly walked away after that brief amount of information, and I sat back with a huff.
When the assembly started, a girl with long and straight brown hair walked over to my table, earning a few glares from the teachers. She was wearing a pair of really skinny khakis and the deep red shirt, along with lots of jewelry and heavy eye liner on.
“Wanna skip with me?” she whispered, sitting down. I stared at her weird, and she laughed heavily. “Sorry, you must think I’m weird. My name’s Marissa and my gift is Earth. I’m also your trainee.” She paused, “Now, come on!” she smiled evilly, motioning for me to follow her. I did, and I began to notice that the teachers and adults were already beginning to fall asleep.
“Where are we going?” I whispered once the cafeteria doors shut behind us.
“You’ll see.” Marissa said, taking me outside and pointing towards a long stretch of woods.
“See that small opening right in the center? That’s where we’re going. Now, run!” she said and took of running. After a split second of hesitation I did as I was told, breaking through the leaves that mostly covered the entrance a moment after her. Each of us were breathing hard, Marissa with a smile on her face.
“Ok, good. Now follow me.”
Marissa lead me through a series of trails that I couldn’t notice, until I realized something;
“Aren’t we like, not supposed to be in these woods?” I asked, suddenly wary.
“That’s kinda why I had you run. Although every adult is in the cafeteria right now.”
I sighed, figuring it was too late to be mad anyways. We were already deep into the woods. Suddenly, the trees broke away and we were standing on a beach, with a mountain to our right and the school on the other side of the trees. I could just barely see three figures walking around and sitting on logs in the middle.
“Who are they?
“Opal, Alicia, and Helix.”
I nodded and we walked over to them.
“So what’s the significance of this place?” I asked.
“Well, this is the place where the battle took place.” Opal said, less moody than I had ever seen her.
