Chapter 2
We landed roughly, and it jolted me awake. I quickly sat up straight and looked at Fawn and Forte.
“Are we there?” I asked.
“No, we have to take a boat next. It’ll be about an hour or two on the boat before we’re at the island.” Forte answered.
“Are you serious?”
“Yes.” He said, and I turned to Fawn.
“What is the school like?” I asked her, trying to pry some information before we get there. Forte glared at me and I stuck my tongue out at him. He quickly turned away.
“Well,” Fawn began, smiling, “It starts off really weird and creepy, but then you learn about its history and you come to love the school. The only thing you should worry about is the woods around it. They’re really scary, and shouldn’t go in them until you’ve learned the story, which you’ll learn later. Oh, and Madame Laurence, the headmistress, is very old fashioned and strict. Listen to her and you’ll survive.”
“O-okay.” I said and turned away. This seemed like a very old and well… scary school. But I wasn’t afraid! Man, I suck at sounding brave. At least I won’t be being beat anymore.
“How many kids go there?” I asked.
“Around a hundred. Now shut up.” Forte grunted, and I listened. He was very controlling.
We finally got out of the airplane, and we practically ran into another limo after grabbing my luggage and drove to a harbor where a boat was waiting.
The captain was fairly young, and he introduced himself as Rick. Forte introduced the three of us to him, and then we went and sat in the back of the boat silently. It’s really weird how quiet these people are. Well except Rick. He continuously was asking me questions about who I was and what kinds of things I liked. When I asked him if he was some kind of creeper he simply replied,
“I’m friends with you Aunt, Ashton.” And continued driving. I sat there shocked for the remaining forty minutes. Was she here, on this island?
~~~~~~
We docked and I jumped out, wobbling a bit. Now that I’m living on an island, I may want to get my sea legs for once. I stood up straight and followed Rick, Forte, and Fawn to a large gated building surrounded by tropical trees and a river. It was really cool! Rick took a key and unlocked it before leading us in and then locking it again. I started to feel like it was some kind of prison, when I really looked at the building. It seemed more like a castle of some sort…
“This way.” Rick said and he lead us into the massive doors and into a grand entry room where a woman who looked strangely like me…
Or me like her.
“Aunt Ashton?” I asked.
“Yes, darling.” She said in a melodic voice and I cautiously walked over and hugged her, breathing in her warm vanilla scent. This was most definitely her. I remembered her now, from so long ago.
She smiled at Rick and lead me down the long hall and into a greenhouse-type place. It was a lounge, and she pointed to wide double doors and told me that was her and her husband, Lucas’, room. Then she pointed to a see-through door that lead to a study and greenhouse, and then there was another door that she lead me through.
“This is your room for whenever you stay with us.”
I stared breathlessly at the room before me. There was a loft bed, but on the bottom it was a full bed, and on top it was a twin bed. It was white with calming blue and green comforters and pillows. On the sides were a small desk and shelves, although there was also a large bookcase already filled with books. There was a TV and beanbags in one corner, that was on a plush purple rug, and then another wall had double doors that lead to a huge bathroom and then an even bigger walk-in closet, that had tons of clothes in it.
“Wow.” Was all I could say.
“I’ll leave you to unpack and get settled.” With that Ashton kissed my head and walked out the door, shutting it silently behind her.
I squealed and ran to the bed, flopping down on it and quickly falling asleep. This is amazing, and so much better than home!
Home….
Had my family woken up yet? Were they mad, sad, or relieved? What if mom was heartbroken and then dad hurt her again… or worse? He killed her? I cried softly. Why had I let myself go?! This was terrible… the guilt I was feeling was worse. What had I done?
