Nerves.
That's all she was.
She was excited as well, of course.
But, anxiety and nerves weighed on her as she walked onto the campus, her backpack on and her pinky ring shining.
She'd never been to a day of school without George.
Always, George had been with her. Always.
They'd had the same classes, the same everything since they were kids.
They were always together.
Were.
Were.
Now they weren't.
And she felt it.
Oh, did she feel it.
She walked along, not quite ready, but just enough so that she'd make it through the day.
She pulled out her phone as she walked to her first class of the day, and sent a text off to George.
'First day. I'm really nervous.'
He responded almost immediately.
Joji: 'You'll be amazing. First day at school without me, I'm proud of you.'
She smiled.
She found her classroom, finding it almost empty besides the few chattering adults as she sat at a desk near the front.
The closer the better, that's how college was.
'I'm in the classroom. Its not the same without you.'
Joji: 'Mind if I call? I've got a few. +you sound like you could use a pep talk.'
'Go ahead.'
After a minute, her phone rang, a photo of Joji flashing across the screen.
"Konichiwa." George said in a red neck accent.
"Hi, George." Emi let out a nervous chuckle.
"You okay?" George asked, in a quiet, tentative tone.
Emi nodded, but quickly realized that he couldn't see her.
"I'll be alright... I'm just... Really nervous and scared."
George nodded, leaning back in his chair as he glanced back at the sleeping girl in his bed.
He ran his fingers through his ebony hair, which was growing a bit too long for this time of year.
He didn't sleep with her.
But they kissed.
Boy, did they kiss.
"Just, remember that I'm a call or a text away, alright?"
"I know." She replied.
"I've got to go." The girl in his bed began to wake.
"Love you, Emi."
"I love you, too, George."
George looked at the girl and felt an irk in his heart.
"Bye."
"Bye." She replied quietly.
Then, he hung up, and Emi felt a bit more confident about the school, and what she was doing, and for once...
She felt that she could handle this by herself.
