I was taking the first watch with Dwalin that night, the wizard had not returned after the argument we had. Gandalf very well knew why I would never trust those elves & yet he insisted on it. So I had to speak my mind to him whether he liked it or not. Even if this Lord Elrond could decipher the map, I shook my head, not possible, never trust an elf. I looked up at the sky, it was less cloudy tonight & the stars were shining brightly. Then my thoughts shifted to Anya Hadin & I could not help thinking what was she doing right now. These past few days she has been constantly on my mind, even more so after our first argument. I silently laughed at myself, no woman ever had this affect on me. But deep inside I did regret at the way I almost yelled at her through no fault of her own. It was getting a little irritating of how she was ignoring me, I wish that there was some way I could talk to her just once. I felt a hand on my shoulder just as Dwalin joined me on the boulder.
Dwalin:(Smirking)"So, my friend, still thinking about her, aren't you?"
Thorin:(Frowning, slightly)"I have no idea about what or whom you are talking about."
Dwalin:(Chuckling)"Really, well I have to admit I did have some doubts about bringing the girl along with us. But so far there haven't been any complaints, in some ways she is proving to be quite bearable, if you know what I mean? She is not like the other humans we've known. Of course we have yet to see how she handles herself in a fight though. But she is very young ain't she, I bet if she were a female dwarf now that could be a problem. For our boys would want to get her attention & not to mention to court her, she is quite pretty, for a human that is."
Greatly annoyed at what he just said I punched him hard on his shoulder.
Thorin: "How can you even say that? I have already talked to Gandalf about her, she is from a well-bred family. Gandalf knew her family for quite a long time & what is wrong about her being human? She has made it with us this far & ...! What is so funny, Dwalin? I'm being serious here!"
Dwalin:(Rubbing his shoulder, chuckling)"By my beard, old friend, she really has gotten to you hasn't she? Even though she is very young but smart. She has spirit I'll give her that much. Cannot say much about the halfling though, the girl is practically babysitting him. And I don't like it either, Thorin."(I looked at him in astonishment)"What? I have seen the way you look at them. But seriously, Thorin did you had to be harsh on her like that a few nights ago? I have ears too you know."
Thorin:(Sighing)"Don't you think I know that, Dwalin? Even I could not understand what made me snap at her like that & I did not like it. I just don't know what to do, old friend."
He did not comment on that & I was grateful, we sat this way in silence for a while. Yet he was right, she is different, those who we've known had either scorned us or belittled us. After we lost Erebor that is. Then Dwalin nudged me in the ribs with his elbow, ow! He has been doing that a lot lately, whether he caught me staring at Anya or either she was nearby. I looked at Dwalin & he gestured me to look behind us. Looking over my shoulder, I saw her heading our way with two bowls in her hands. Her face was void with emotions, probably has something on her mind. I felt my heart thump slightly faster as she came closer. She had this graceful walk that could melt any man's heart. Before she would notice I turned my head back, Dwalin patted my leg as he stood up & mouthed, Talk to her. Then he headed towards the girl took one bowl from her, he then nodded & sat a little further away. Then she was heading towards me with the other bowl, I rubbed my hands against my legs before taking it from her. My fingers gently brushed her hand & it sent that familiar jolt through my arm again. Whoa! But I managed to hide it, I nodded my head at the girl. Without saying a word she turned to leave, I had do to something otherwise I won't be able to get through to her.
Thorin: "Would you like to join me?"
She stopped in her tracks right then, then she turned her head slightly to look at me, she seems confused.
Anya: "Beg your pardon?"
Thorin:(Clearing my throat)"I was wondering if you would like to join me here, Anya?"
This was the first time I addressed her by her name. It felt natural, her eyes became as big as saucers, I could not help but smile slightly. Damn her eyes! Then she glanced at Dwalin, who I know was acting as if oblivious to everything but I know that he wants me to spend some time with her. Reluctantly she turned & accepted my invitation, she sat down but kept her distance, I respected that. We sat there in silence, I was staring at the bowl, speechless for the first time in my life. This had never happened to me before. I looked at the girl, she was staring at the stars, I noticed that her hands were empty. Had she eaten or...?
Thorin: "Aren't you having anything or have you already eaten?"
Anya: "Well, actually I'm not in the mood for the stew, not that I mean that Bombur is a bad cook or anything."
Curiously I saw her place her hand in a satchel tied around her slim waist & she took something out. It was some kind of a bread rolled up.
Thorin: "What is that you are having?"
Anya: "Just a little something I made myself, pigs in a blanket. Actually its just some cooked beef wrapped around a bread with works of your choice. Would you like to try some?"
I nodded my head & she gave me half of it. I could see some meat in it along with some interesting items. It was still warm & its aroma was tempting. I took a small bite, it was good for its flavors were dancing on my taste buds. Next I took a slightly bigger bite.
Thorin: "This is delicious, never had one before. You really are a good cook, Anya."
I smiled as I looked at her & she began to blush slightly at what I said. God, the way she blushes made my fingers itch to touch her face. Yet I restrained myself, by Durin she was getting to me. We hardly knew each other as it is.
Thorin: "So I assume that your mother taught you how to cook?"
Anya:(Nodded while eating)"Yes, she was an excellent cook herself. Being the youngest & an only daughter has its perks."
Thorin: "Only daughter? So you had brothers?"
Anya: "Actually, I had 3 brothers. Their names were Andrein, Anakin & Aerof. Anakin & Aerof were twins. We were a handful bunch."
Thorin: "Yes, you did mention to me about your family being killed in an orc attack."
Anya: "Ambushed to be exact, Gandalf was there. My older brother, Andrein & I were the only survivors."
Thorin:(Sighing)"About that, Anya, actually, I wanted to apologize to you the way I had reacted that night. I shouldn't have."
Anya: "No need to apologize, you did not know about my past."
Thorin: "Thats true, I don't. Which is why I have been inquiring about you from Gandalf."
I blushed slightly finishing my meal, I could feel her eyes on me.
Anya: "You've been inquiring about me? Why?"
Inwardly I sighed with relief, pleased to know that she wasn't offended just seemed pleasantly surprised.
Thorin: "To avoid further unpleasantries in the future, between us."
I smiled as I stared in her eyes, she hid her smile as she finished her food. She was really beginning to amaze me with her innocence.
Thorin: "Now that I know you can cook, I still yet have to see you fight."
At that she straightened her shoulders & looked at me.
Anya: "As I said before that you shall not be disappointed, Sir."
Thorin: "I would prefer it if you called me Thorin, Anya."
She was about to say something but suddenly she turned her head to look behind us. I heard it too, footsteps, turning as well we saw someone heading towards us. Dwalin saw him as well, dropped his bowl & stood up. Anya & I stepped down the boulder to join Dwalin. As the figure came closer, I recognized him immediately, it was Fili!
